A civil partnership is a legal relationship which can be registered by two people of the same sex. If you are in a gay or lesbian relationship, registering a civil partnership will give your relationship legal recognition.

This will give you added legal rights in Spain. Not all people living together, however, decide to get married. If you are not looking to get married, but are in a serious and dedicated relationship, here is some legal information to keep in mind. Note that every Spanish district may have different laws with regard to partnerships.

The law regulating registration of a ?Union de Hecho? in the Comunidad Valenciana is contained in Ley 1/2001 of 6 April 2001of the Generalitat Valenciana, and the procedure for registration is laid down in Decreto 61/2002 of 23rd April 2002 of the Gobierno Valenciano.

Same sex couples who register their partnership gain access to a number of legal rights. These include rights to survivor pensions, recognition for immigration purposes, equal treatment for tax purposes, including inheritance tax, protection from domestic violence.

For example, if one of you dies after you have registered your civil partnership, the surviving partner will have the right in certain circumstances to claim a survivor pension, and they will also be recognised under inheritance tax rules.

Failing to register as Civil Partners can have dire consequences for Expats who are or become resident in the Comunidad Valenciana.

For example, a married couple, or couple in a ?Union de Hecho?, resident in the Comunidad have a generous exemption from Spanish Inheritance Tax, but this would not be available to NON Civil Partners. As a consequence, in the event of the death of one non-registered Civil Partner, the direct financial consequences could be disastrous for the surviving Partner, as he would be regarded as unmarried and the survivor would be treated as an unrelated stranger and subject to the highest rates of Inheritance Tax!!

There are about 100 local Register Offices for live-in couples in Spain. They have different provisions and several steps needed for their registration. However, I general these are some of the requirements for live-in couples to register:

You are an opposite-sex couple or a same-sex couple

You shall be stably cohabiting - living together in a de facto relationship

You shall have common interests to maintain a family life together

You and your partner should be of legal age or emancipated minors

You must be legally capable

You must register with the town district where the Register Office is located

As a result, Danish consumers pay some of the highest electricity rates on the planet.

'Happy Endings': The Gang Needs Brad And Jane To Fight And Usher In Spring (VIDEO)

"Happy Endings" (Wed., 9:30 p.m. EST on ABC) introduced a rather unusual annual tradition the gang has been enjoying for years. Well, most of them have been enjoying it. So much so that they apparently go out of their way to make t-shirts, and consider it the official beginning of spring. The "it" in question is a huge blow-out fight between Brad and Jane.

The problem this year was that Brad and Jane simply weren't fighting. Every time the gang thought something was going to set them off, they instead managed to brush it off like it was no big thing. But realizing that for whatever reason this was something their friends needed, Brad and Jane decided to fake the sixth "Spring Smackdown" for their benefit.

But the fake fight, and fake getting away from one another into the arms of their friends, just didn't sit right with anyone. It still didn't feel like spring was coming. Luckily, an open patio door led to a real fight. But this time, rather than simply sitting back and enjoying the fight, the gang came together to instead help the couple realize the silliness of it and instead make up. Maybe they'd all grown up a little bit this year.

Special shout-out to "Bear Max." It was a bit abrupt, and seemingly out of character considering he'd just recently started a serious relationship that was developing nicely, but it was so funny it was almost forgivable. For the transformation into Pooh Bear alone, just go with it for the laughs.

Fast-food menu calorie counts legally compliant but not as helpful to consumers as they should be

Calorie listings on fast-food chain restaurant menus might meet federal labeling requirements but don't do a good job of helping consumers trying to make healthy meal choices, a new Columbia University School of Nursing (CUSON) study reports.

The study, by Elizabeth Gross Cohn, RN, NP, DNSc, assistant professor of nursing at CUSON, and colleagues, was published online on February 16, 2012, in the Journal of Urban Health. The researchers studied the calorie counts for 200 food items on menu boards in fast-food chain restaurants in the New York inner-city neighborhood of Harlem. Since 2006, the City has had a standard menu labeling law that includes some, though not all, of the new federal requirements.

"Although most postings were legally compliant, they did not demonstrate utility," the authors say. "Menu postings for individual servings are easily understood, but complex math skills are needed to interpret meals designed to serve more than one person. In some items, calories doubled depending on flavor, and the calorie posting did not give enough information to make healthier selections."

The federal health reform law passed in March 2010 requires restaurants with 20 or more locations to provide calorie data and additional nutritional information for menu items and self-service foods. The Food and Drug Administration is now considering how best to guide chain restaurants in posting calorie counts on menu boards.

Easily understood calorie listings could be helpful to consumers trying to make healthy food choices, especially in light of the increasing prevalence of obesity among American adults and children. The trend is a particular problem in low-income and inner-city neighborhoods, where sources of more healthful foods might not be as common as fast-food fare. Studies suggest that consumers are generally unaware of, or inaccurately estimate, the number of calories in restaurant foods.

To collect the data, volunteers equipped with digital cameras worked in pairs and canvassed each designated area block by block to identify national restaurant outlets. A total of 70 menus and menu boards from 12 restaurant chains were photographed, and 200 food items rated, using a measure of "practical utility" that the researchers developed to calculate (1) what constitutes a single serving and (2) the number of calories in a single serving. The researchers then combined this measure with current FDA guidelines to develop a seven-item "menu rating tool."

The researchers found that, while most restaurants studied have posted calorie counts, in the majority of cases there was insufficient information to make use of them at the point of purchase. One reason for this was that the majority of the items on the menu boards studied were combination meals rather than individual items. Furthermore, it was increasingly difficult to calculate calories per meal when the posting included anything more than an individual unit of measure.

Calorie counts became more challenging as the food items became more complex, especially combination and multi-serving items, which represented the largest percentage of items recorded. These required several mathematical and nutritional calculations, which might be more challenging among low socioeconomic groups in urban areas where fast-food chain restaurants tend to be most concentrated.

For example, the study reports, a bucket of chicken was listed as 3,240 to 12,360 calories, but the menu board did not contain enough information to determine the number of pieces of chicken in a serving size. Similarly, a hero combo meal ranged from 500 to 2,080 calories, but no information was provided on how a consumer would order within the lower range of this menu item. Specialty pizzas were offered in wide ranges without a clear explanation as to how they differed, since the calorie count was based on a standard size and standard set of toppings.

The authors note that their study was limited to one urban community and did not focus on actual food purchasing behavior but rather on the posted menu boards in chain restaurants. Still, they say, their work suggests the need for more understandable and useful calorie information in posted menus.

"As further legislation is developed, we support the FDA in their commitment to having menu boards that are useful at all levels of literacy," they conclude. Specifically, the authors support a system that uses dashes or slashes to more intuitively associate calorie counts to food combinations instead of the current system of ranges. In such a revised system, a breakfast sandwich, for example, would be listed as "egg with ham/bacon/sausage 350/550/750."

"In low-income communities with a high density of chain restaurants, and where educational attainment of consumers may be low, simplifying calorie postings and minimizing the math required to calculate calories would increase menu board utility," they say.

So here's a bit of background on the world of Valkath. I'll be adding more to it as time goes by.

History:
Long ago, when the universe was still young (relatively at least), there was a pantheon of gods who watched over Valkath. Back then, the people were quite pious, and they worshiped the gods with great zeal. However, the followers of two gods whose names have been stricken from history forever, were the most pious of all. Their patron deities were quite pleased with them, so they each bequeathed a token of their power unto their followers. The first set of believers were granted great power over the world they lived in. This power would later be called "MAGIC". The other set of followers were granted a different sort of power. They were granted "KNOWLEDGE". Both sets of followers were quite happy with their new gifts, and so too were their gods, for they received even more worship from them. However, this happiness was not to last, for one night, the two gods got incredibly drunk. One of them insinuated that the other god had been stingy and gave his followers a terrible gift. This enraged the other god. They argued and argued over whose gift was better, for a great many years. Eventually, their followers joined in, determined to prove the great benevolence of their god. Those with magic developed more and more powerful spells, each more terrifying than the last. The followers of Knowledge learned how to transmit information and ideas at near instantaneous speeds over great distances, and with that knowledge, they developed more and more terrifying technologies to combat their magic wielding foes. As the war between the followers escalated, the gods got even angrier with one another, and they too joined in the fight. Feeding off of each other, this war eventually reached a point where the world that had been so peaceful was left little more than a destroyed ruin. The people realized that the war was caused by the very gods they once revered as perfect, and soon lost their faith. The worship of those gods was banned, and with it, the power of those gods was diminished till they no longer existed. The remaining pantheon, alarmed at this turn of events, rebuilt Valkath as best they could, but with two gods missing, they could only partially re-create their world. Incomplete as it was, the world started to slowly die, unable to sustain itself. Then, one of the goddesses had a terrific idea. In order to truly survive, the world and its inhabitants would one day need to be independent of the gods, like a child eventually outgrows its parents. She and the rest of the pantheon decided that they would place a system within the world in which its inhabitants could one day finish rejuvenating the world, and become independent of the gods who had created them. Only by doing so would the world, and its inhabitants, ever survive. To this day, legends speak of a group of heroes who will emerge to restore the world and begin a new chapter in this worlds history. Countless adventurers have ventured into the ruins left behind by the great war, seeking to unlock their untold secrets, in the hopes of becoming one of the heroes of legend.

A special "remix" edition has been ported over to the micro-machine by a team at Seneca College. Although there's already a Debian release for the diminutive device, the project's official blog states that Fedora Remix is the distribution it'll be recommending to users. The OS image fits on a 2GB memory card, and comes complete with a GUI, programming and system administration tools, web browser and other essential apps to get you going. If you want to see the Pi in action, there's a video after the break demonstrating the OS, along with a look at that user interface. As for that February 20th release date, sadly that seems less reliable.

Fourth-quarter retail earnings season kicked off last week with mixed results from Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE: ANF) and Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN). Many more retailers will post their results this week and next, including Walmart (NYSE: WMT), Home Depot (NYSE: HD), Macy's (NYSE: M), Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) and Safeway (NYSE: SWY).

While we wait for results to come in, here are a few retail stocks that are on roll now. Their share prices are more than 20% higher than at the beginning of the year. They all have market caps of more than $1 billion, and they all offer dividends too.

Advance Auto Parts (NYSE: AAP) is trading almost 23% higher year to date due in part to a nearly 7% pop last week after the company posted better-than-expected quarterly results. The company opened 99 new stores last year. The $6.2 billion market cap company has a dividend yield of 0.3%. Its P/E and PEG ratios are less than the industry average. The stock has outperformed peers AutoZone (NYSE: AZO) and O'Reilly Automotive (NASDAQ: ORLY) over the past six months.

Companhia Brasileira de Distribuicao's (NYSE: CBD) share price is about 29% higher year to date, including an 8% rise last week. The second biggest retailer in Latin America operates more than 1,600 hypermarkets, supermarkets, department stores and convenience stores in Brazil. Its dividend yield is 0.9%, the market cap is $12.2 billion and the long-term EPS growth forecast is 30.8%. The stock has outperformed Costco (NASDAQ: COST) and Walmart over the past year.

Finish Line (NASDAQ: FINL) is up about 23% year to date and reached a new 52-week high on Friday. But short interest is 10.8% of the float, and the company has been a rumored takeover target. The Indianapolis-based footwear retailer has a return on equity of 15.9% and its operating margin is better than the industry average. The market cap is $1.2 billion. But over the past six months, the stock has underperformed Dick's Sporting Goods (NYSE: DKS) and Foot Locker (NYSE: FL).

Gap (NYSE: GPS) is trading near a 52-week high and is more than 22% higher year to date. Better-than-expected sales numbers and optimistic guidance pushed the share price up more than 10% at the beginning of the month. The San Francisco-based retailer has a market cap of $11.1 billion and its dividend yield is 1.9%. The return on equity is 27.9%. Over the past six months, the stock has outperformed competitors Abercrombie & Fitch and American Eagle Outfitters (NYSE: AEO).

JCPenney (NYSE: JCP) is more than 22% higher year to date, though shares have traded mostly between $41 and $43 for the past three weeks. The company lately has been embroiled in controversy over its spokesperson Ellen DeGeneres. The dividend yield is 1.8% and the market cap is $9.1 billion. The long-range EPS growth forecast is 16.3%. But short interest is 17.2% of the float. Over the past six months, the stock has outperformed rivals Macy's and Kohl's (NYSE: KSS).

Luxottica Group (NYSE: LUX) shares are trading up more than 21% year to date and have almost returned to the 52-week high from last April. The Italian eyewear maker saw double-digit sales growth in the fourth quarter and is scheduled to post full-year results February 28. The company has a market cap of $15.9 billion and the dividend yield is 1.8%. Its long-term EPS growth forecast is 14.0%. Over the past six months, the stock has outperformed the Dow and the S&P 500.

Penske Automotive Group (NYSE: PAG) shares are trading more than 25% higher than at the beginning of the year. The stock hit a multiyear high last week after the auto retailer posted a 67% jump in profit for the fourth quarter. Penske has a dividend yield of 0.4%, the long-term EPS growth forecast is 18.1% and the P/E ratio is less than the industry average. Over the past six months, the stock has outperformed competitors AutoNation (NYSE: AN) and CarMax (NYSE: KMX).

NEW YORK (AP) ? Whitney Houston's final resting place will be next to her father, John Russell Houston Jr.

Houston will be laid to rest at the Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, New Jersey, after funeral services this weekend, a source close to the family confirmed. Houston's father was buried there in 2003.

Fifteen hundred guests are expected to attend the private funeral services including Aretha Franklin, Clive Davis and Stevie Wonder. Houston, who was 48, died in Beverly Hills, the day before the Grammy awards.

The funeral service will be held at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark.

'Sweethearting' deals cost retailers billions

Jim Dailakis, a comedian and actor, got a free day on his rental car last year thanks to a generous company employee who was flirting with him.

?Not only was she sweet, she had the best smile and a wonderful personality,? said Dailakis, who lives in New York. ?I was very grateful.?

Executives of the unidentified company probably would not be so grateful.

The freebie Dailakis enjoyed has a name in business lingo. It's called "sweethearting," and it costs companies billions of dollars in losses, according to a new study to be published in The Journal of Marketing.

While there are some companies that encourage perks for favored customers, the new study focuses on ?unauthorized discounts to customers, thus not embraced by management,? said Clay Voorhees, assistant professor of marketing at Michigan State University and a co-author of the report.

Voorhees and his colleagues surveyed about 800 customers and employees? of restaurants, hotels, car washes and other services, and some 67 percent said they had participated in sweethearting in the past two months, according to a summary of the study. Some employees said they were motivated by the potential prospect of receiving better tips.

Voorhees said the freebies translate to $80 billion in losses for the retail industry annually.

?For some firms,? Voorhees said, ?if their employees hook up one out of 20 of their customers with completely free goods and services, this means the profitability of this employee can approach zero.?

But there is another side to the sweetheart deals: Close customer?employee relationships are key to building customer satisfaction and loyalty the researchers note.

Still, they suggest that employers do better pre-employment screening, training and supervision to limit "the potential damaging effects of deviant acts such as sweethearting,? they wrote.

It is not clear that everyone views the sweetheart deals as deviant.

?Restaurants, of course, have their own internal policies for these things, and some do allow for discretionary comped items, especially to regular customers,? said Annika Stensson, a spokeswoman for the National Restaurant Association.

The mid-term report lays groundwork for next phase of study

Orlando, Fla. February 15, 2012 Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (Sanford-Burnham) and Florida Hospital researchers recently returned from Japan where they reviewed the progress that has been made at the mid-point of their research partnership with Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited (Takeda). The two-year collaboration focuses on the discovery and evaluation of new therapeutic approaches to obesity. The scientists reported benchmark data that sets the stage for a key element in future drug developmentthe testing of obesity drug candidates.

"The data generated thus far lays the groundwork for analysis of how individuals respond differently to disease," said Steven R. Smith, M.D., an expert in the obesity field and scientific director of the Florida Hospital Sanford-Burnham Translational Research Institute for Metabolism and Diabetes (TRI), where the Florida Hospital portion of the work is being performed. "This partnership with Takeda, TRI and Sanford-Burnham establishes a model to accelerate the development of safe and effective therapies."

During the first year of research, the modeling of fit and obese states laid the groundwork for discovery of a candidate drug for metabolic disease. Clinical research at the TRI assessed the physiological response to dietary changes, such as high sugar or high fat consumption. Across the translational bridge at Sanford-Burnham, patient-derived samples were analyzed using advanced technologies, such as metabolomics, to measure individual response. Ultimately, these metabolic fingerprints may serve as biomarkers and novel drug targets to project how subgroups of patients may respond to new therapies.

This bold collaborative research project involves combining the results of fundamental laboratory studies at Sanford-Burnham with parallel studies conducted with human samples by the research team at Florida Hospital. The results are reviewed on a regular basis in joint meetings of the basic laboratory team at Sanford-Burnham, the clinical research team at Florida Hospital, and the Takeda scientists in Shonan, Japan. Videoconferencing, together with semi-annual face-to-face meetings, have allowed for a stimulating exchange of ideas and efficient planning for next steps. The model serves as a high-profile example of how research institutes such as Sanford-Burnham can partner with industry to accelerate discovery of new drugs and diagnostic biomarkers relevant to common diseases such as obesity and diabetes that afflict populations worldwide.

"Our research projects have progressed extremely well and we were anxious to provide a research update to our partners in Japan," said Daniel Kelly, M.D., scientific director of Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute at Lake Nona. This was not, however, Takeda's first glimpse at the data. Researchers from Takeda, which is Japan's largest pharmaceutical company, met earlier this year in Orlando. A visiting Takeda scientist also works within the Sanford-Burnham laboratories. "This type of close collaboration during the fundamental discovery phase is part of a new model for academic-commercial partnerships designed to expedite new drug candidates into the development pipeline," said Dr. Kelly.

The partnership, launched in February 2011, aligns complementary strengths in biomedical research, clinical research, and drug development to identify and validate obesity-related biomarkers and new drug targets of mutual interest. The multi-disciplinary team of basic scientists and clinical researchers at Sanford-Burnham and the TRI provides Takeda with a research continuum from laboratory bench to patient bedside.

"We're optimistic that this collaboration will contribute to Takeda's goal of identifying novel targets that will lead to the development of new therapeutics to treat patients suffering from obesity," said Paul Chapman, Ph.D., general manager of Takeda's Pharmaceutical Research Division.

The partners expect that this research agreement will set the stage for future collaborative drug discovery programs aimed at novel therapeutics to treat obesity.
