Media leaders, others react to death of Sulzberger

Reaction to the death of former New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, who died Saturday:

___

"Punch, the old Marine captain who never backed down from a fight, was an absolutely fierce defender of the freedom of the press. His inspired leadership in landmark cases such as New York Times v. Sullivan and the Pentagon Papers helped to expand access to critical information and to prevent government censorship and intimidation." ? Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., Sulzberger's son and the current publisher of the Times.

___

"As an editor you knew that if you went to the publisher and sought his support on an issue that you deemed to be of high importance you could pretty much count on getting it. He knew how to back his people. ... As well as a publisher and a colleague he was a good friend. The last years have been extremely difficult with his health problems. He bore them with great courage. I admired him hugely." ? Former Times executive editor Joseph Lelyveld.

___

"He was a firm believer in the importance of a free and independent press ? one that isn't afraid to seek the truth, hold those in power accountable, and tell the stories that need to be told." ? President Barack Obama.

___

"It also became increasingly clear that the system of monarchy helped save the New York Times as a great newspaper. Punch made some bad calls as a businessman, along with some great ones, but by far the most important fact about him and his family was that they never wavered in their commitment to great journalism." ? Times columnist Nicholas D. Kristof.

___

"If you weren't around then, you forget the unbelievable outrage that greeted those sections. But in retrospect it was the right decision both editorially and economically." ? Nicholas Lemann, dean of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, on Sulzberger's move to expand the Times to sections such as Living and Metro.

___

"Punch Sulzberger was a giant in the industry, a leader who fought to preserve the vital role of a free press in society and championed journalism executed at the highest level." ? Associated Press President and CEO Gary Pruitt.

___

"With enormous power and authority he was as humble a person as you could ever meet. ... People with enormous power often dominate a room. He did not. And yet the power and authority was there." ? Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch.

___

"I found him always a gentleman and always ready to at least listen." ? Public relations maven Howard Rubenstein, who brought many clients to meet with Sulzberger and Times editors.

Economy is the name of the game in Mass. Senate race

As Massachusetts voters?scrutinize Republican Sen. Scott Brown and challenger Democratic Elizabeth Warren the candidates may be have to tackle issues like foreign policy and national security.?

Foreign policy and national security issues have largely taken a backseat to economic concerns in the hard-fought and expensive US Senate race in Massachusetts, and barring a monumental international event, that dynamic is unlikely to change in the final weeks of the campaign.

But with continued instability in the Middle East and other global challenges, the positions of Republican incumbent Scott Brown and Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren may well come into sharper focus. Both will be asked to provide voters with a sense of how ? as a US senator for the next six years ? they would view America's role in the world and vote on key questions from national defense and trade policy.

The candidates' written responses to a series of questions on foreign affairs posed by The Associated Press reveal contrasts both stark and subtle, yet also some striking similarities in approach.

On the threat posed by Iran, both Brown and Warren indicated all options up to and including military action must be considered if diplomacy and sanctions fail to end the regime's pursuit of nuclear capability. Calling Iran the "most serious threat to world peace and stability," Brown criticized Warren's use during the campaign's first televised?debate?of the word "nuanced" to describe the preferred U.S. approach.

"President Obama attempted a more nuanced approach to Iran early in his term, and he quickly discovered it didn't work," Brown said.

Diplomacy and sanctions had merely slowed Iran's nuclear program and bought some time, he added, and the administration now needed to apply "severe pressure" on Iran's government and economy.

Warren said she supported Obama's strategy for preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear power.

"We have the toughest sanctions we have ever had against Iran, and I will work to make them even tougher," she said.

The candidates ended their response on Iran with similar language: Brown said the "US must keep every option on the table;" Warren said she "wouldn't take any options off the table," while also cautioning that "we must not rush to war."

Commenting on another Middle East hotspot, both declared that Syrian President Bashir Assad must go, but they differed on how the US should respond to the government's violent crackdown on dissidents.

"It is appropriate to identify moderate elements within the opposition and provide them with weapons so they can fight back against Assad and the Syrian army," Brown said. The senator made clear he did not, at this time, support sending in US ground troops or imposing a no-fly zone.

"Options such as providing lethal support such as weapons, establishing humanitarian zones, or setting up a no-fly zone must be carefully considered," Warren said. "Because lethal assistance can have complex and unintended consequences, we should not act unless we are confident that we can do more good than harm and that we have a clear plan and achievable goals."

Neither Brown nor Warren offered a specific opinion on Obama's timetable for withdrawing troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014. Brown said he was less concerned about the precise timing as with the need to defeat the enemy and place Afghan forces in position to assume control of the country's security.

Warren said the US should leave Afghanistan as "quickly as possible," while ensuring the safety of troops, so that the $2 billion spent weekly on the war can be used for domestic needs.

The nation's budget woes and the winding down of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are likely to renew pressure on Congress to rein in military spending. Here, both candidates advocated a smart approach to any defense reductions, with Warren opposing "across-the-board" cuts and Brown warning that defense programs should not be trimmed indiscriminately.

The Republican, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said he backed the panel's $634.4 billion defense authorization while also supporting the Pentagon's goal of finding $500 million in savings. Warren did not cite a savings target, but said the ending of the wars could permit downsizing of the US Army. She also called for greater investment in cybersecurity.

HORSE RACING: Bob Baffert, Rafael Bejarano form imposing team at

Game On Dude, with Rafael Bejarano aboard, won Saturday's Grade I $250,000 Awesome Again Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita. (Benoit Photo)

ARCADIA - It was a big day at Santa Anita on Saturday for trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Rafael Bejarano, who teamed up to win three of five $250,000 Grade I races.

It also was a good day for the track, which drew a crowd of 17,565 despite warm temperatures.

This is the second year of Santa Anita's autumn meet, which replaced the long-standing Oak Tree meet. Saturday's crowd was larger than any last year.

The big win for the team of Baffert and Bejarano came in the 10th race on the 11-race card, the Awesome Again Stakes, with Game On Dude showing he is on his game.

Game On Dude, a 5-year-old gelding, went off as the 2-1 favorite and didn't disappoint his backers in winning going away by 3 1/4 lengths over Nonios.

Game On Dude, who now is headed for the Breeders' Cup Classic, covered the 1 1/8 miles on dirt in 1:48.98.

Richard's Kid, formerly trained by Baffert and now handled by rival Doug O'Neill, had to struggle for third by a neck.

The string of Grade I races began with the sixth, the renamed Chandelier Stakes. Baffert and Bejarano won that one with Executiveprivilege.

Then came the FrontRunner Stakes, and they won that one with Power Broker in an upset over O'Neill-trained Know More, a distant second.

"I was hoping for this kind of outcome," Baffert said.

No kidding.

"They were all coming into their races really well. I'm glad that Power Broker showed his stuff.

"We still have a ways to go, and as long as they all stay healthy and keep moving forward that's the main goal."

Power Broker was coming off a Del Mar meet in which he finished second, third and a disappointing fourth in three races.

Baffert blamed Del Mar's synthetic track for the poor showing and added the horse recently had a great workout.

The next race for Power Broker, after his impressive victory, will be the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

The FrontRunner Stakes, formerly the Norfolk, was renamed after the restaurant atop of the Santa Anita grandstands.

The Chandelier, formerly the Oak Leaf, gets its new name from the legendary bar in the Turf Club.

The Awesome Again, formerly the Goodwood, is named after a horse bred by Santa Anita owner Frank Stronach.

Game On Dude, who finished second in last year's Breeders' Cup Classic when ridden by Chantal Sunderland, is a son of Awesome Again.

All five Grade I races Saturday were part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" series.

The FrontRunner Stakes, a race for 2-year-olds, also was part of a new "Road to the Kentucky Derby" qualifying point system. It was one of the first two qualifiers.

The other was run earlier Saturday in Newmarket, England.

With his victory at Santa Anita, Power Broker earned 10 points toward qualifying for next year's Kentucky Derby.

Baffert is no fan of the new format.

"It's too early," he said. "I like the Breeders' Cup `Win and You're In.' They should have it where you win a big prep race and you're in the Kentucky Derby."

Prometheus Bluray specs unveiled, arrives with seven hours of extras October 9th video

While Ridley Scott's latest flick is already available on just about every downloadable movie store you could name, Prometheus is still a few weeks away from making its debut on disc and now Fox has officially released all the details. The extras listed in an earlier leak appear to be accurate, with a Second Screen iPad app that promises access to character Peter Weyland's archives, while much of the 15 minutes or so of deleted and alternative scenes have already been posted on the internet (search around if you absolutely must know what else there is and can't wait / don't want to spend the cash). Arriving October 9th, there's a four disc set with both a Blu-ray 3D edition and bonus extras disc with featurettes for a total of seven hours of bonus materials, while the two disc set trims it to just one Blu-ray and DVD / digital copy. The two disc set is currently selling for $24.99 on Amazon, while the four disc edition bumps the price another $5. A trailer with a peek at some of those extras and the full list of details awaits after the break, but an explanation for why anyone would ever try to touch some weird alien snake is something you'll have to find on your own.

Gory past sounds death knell for building | Local | News | The ...

If heritage advocates don?t scream too loudly over the Queens Ave. building targeted by Shmuel Farhi?s wrecking ball, there?s likely a very good ? or, at least, very grisly ? reason.

City politicians will likely decide in November whether to let the real estate magnate raze the building at 199 Queens, near Richmond St., to build what he pledges will be a $50-million mixed-use tower.

Council?s heritage advisers have OK?d Farhi?s plan ? and one of London?s most passionate history buffs has no doubt there will be little fight to stop the demolition on heritage grounds.

Why?

Because a push to underscore the historic value would no doubt focus on its single most significant event: it was where officials in 1879 found the body of Kate Gardner, believed to have been the first victim of a budding serial killer some consider a Jack The Ripper suspect.

?It would be the height of poor taste? to promote that, said heritage activist Joe O?Neil. ?If . . . My Sister?s Place or something like that wanted to move in and name the house after Kate Gardner that would be different, but to just say this should be a heritage house because of a murder would be offensive.??

Gardner, a pregnant, 21-year-old Tecumseh House Hotel worker, was found dead behind the house at 199 Queens on May 3, 1879. Also backing onto that spot was the Dundas St. office of Dr. Thomas Neill Cream, an abortionist.

Though a London jury found Gardner died ?from the effects of chloroform,? they did not name a suspect. But many in London eyed Cream ? who skipped town for Chicago, where he committed at least one murder and was jailed in 1881.

The Ripper-Cream link (which O?Neil and many serious historians doubt) hinges on when the deadly doctor was released from jail. Official records say it was 1891, three years after the never-found Ripper stalked London, England?s Whitechapel area and killed five prostitutes.

Some wonder, though, if he got out earlier and was back in England in 1888 for the infamous killing spree many believe must have been committed by a doctor.

This much is certain: Cream was back in England in 1891 and 1892 and was convicted and hanged for killing four prostitutes. (He claimed ?I am Jack . . .? just as he was hanged.)

Angus McLaren, a University of Victoria professor who wrote about Cream?s England crimes, doubts he was the Ripper. But in a 2004 interview he told The Free Press: ?There was probably a copycat aspect to (Cream?s) killings in the sense that the notion of killing prostitutes must have been very much in the air? post-Ripper.

Back here in London, O?Neil says he could see no heritage advocate using the Gardner death to help preserve Farhi?s building at 199 Queens.

?I don?t know anyone in the past who has used an infamous murder to justify (saving) any sort of historic site.?

Farhi has pledged to build a $50-million structure that would include ground-floor commercial space, several stories of residential units and many levels of what he calls much-needed parking.

Looper

Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Looper.

Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Looper.

Photo by Alan Markfield/DMG Entertainment/Looper, LLC.

After you've seen Looper, come back and listen to our Spoiler Special podcast with Dana Stevens and Dan Kois. You can also download the podcast.

Looper is the third film from Rian Johnson, whose debut feature Brick (2005) somehow pulled off the brazen gimmick of setting a noir murder mystery in a suburban American high school. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (then known to most audiences as the alien kid on the family sitcom Third Rock from the Sun) played the lead role?a teenage Sam Spade investigating his girlfriend?s murder?with an alchemically perfect combination of hip detachment and wary melancholy. Gordon-Levitt was already a rising actor, having been singled out by critics in less-mainstream roles, like the gay drifter he played in Gregg Araki?s moody, unforgettable Mysterious Skin. But it was only after Brick that he began his steady rise toward household-name status, playing a lovelorn greeting-card designer in (500) Days of Summer, a brain-cancer patient in 50/50, and a credible action sidekick in both Inception and The Dark Knight Rises.

I?m an avowed JGL fan, so the prospect of Gordon-Levitt and Johnson working together again was enticing.?So?was Looper?s high-concept sci-fi premise: Gordon-Levitt plays a hired assassin whose targets are sent back in time from the future. It?s 2044, and time travel hasn?t yet been invented, but?to employ the future-perfect tense useful mainly for time-travel movies?it will have been invented in 30 years. By that point, a fearful, vaguely post-apocalyptic government will have forbidden any use of the technology ... so, to paraphrase the NRA bumper sticker, when time machines are outlawed, only outlaws will have time machines. Soon the contraptions (which look, pleasingly, like Jules Verne-era bathyspheres) are used solely on the black market, transporting the human garbage of the future back in time for the past to clean up. At least, that's how Joe (Gordon-Levitt) justifies to himself the fact that he makes his living waiting in deserted fields for hooded, cuffed men to appear out of nowhere so he can shoot them with a blunderbuss.

Underground assassins like Joe?members of an organized force led by menacing boss-from-the-future Abe (Jeff Daniels)?are known as ?loopers,? for the chilling reason that, after being paid handsomely and given an early retirement that lasts exactly 30 years, they themselves will be captured, sent back in time and killed, thus closing the ?loop? of their lives. As the film begins, a new crime lord, a fearsome gangster known as the Rainmaker, has taken over in the future and is issuing new orders about the existing loopers: He wants all their future selves sent back in time and killed immediately, preferably by the younger versions of themselves. (Why exactly this setup would be desirable was one plot point among many that eluded me. Given that the victims from the future are being sent back with their heads covered, why would it matter which looper killed whom?)

Joe?s featherbrained fellow looper Seth (Paul Dano), encountering his own later-self, isn?t able to bring himself to pull the trigger, and the man gets away, resulting in a very bad outcome for both present and future Seths (and the first of several extended bursts of stomach-churning violence). Joe resolves that, when and if his own future self appears in cuffs before him, he won?t hesitate to blow him away?but when that day comes and Joe?s future self turns out to be Bruce Willis, all bets are off.

Future Joe manages to knock Past Joe out cold, take his gun, and head out into the world to find and kill the child destined one day to grow into the Rainmaker. Based on a tip about the super-criminal?s date and place of birth, old Joe has narrowed the candidates down to three small children, one of whom (Pierce Gagnon) is the son of a lonely sugarcane farmer (Emily Blunt) in whose barn young Joe has taken shelter while on the run from Abe?s men, who are now hunting down both Joes with extreme prejudice.

You see where this is going: At some point, Young Joe and Old Joe are going to have to meet up and debrief about the 30 years that separate them, then decide whether they?re going to continue as allies or enemies. The moment this finally happens, in an Edward Hopper-esque diner in the middle of nowhere, was for me the movie?s high point. As they stare at each other in profile over two identical plates of steak and eggs, Willis and Gordon-Levitt, such different types both physically and temperamentally, make a strange sense as each others? time-traveling avatars, especially since we?re meant to imagine that Joe?s years of hard living to come will make him a coarser, tougher man in middle age. (Levitt was also fitted with facial prosthetics to make his fine-boned face more closely resemble Willis? craggier features. The nose works; the eyebrows are pushing it.) The diner scene also snaps with smart dialogue that playfully bats around sci-fi clich?s; asked by his 2044 self to explicate one of the paradoxes of time travel, 2074 Joe impatiently dismisses the question, insisting they have no time to ?start making diagrams with straws.?

Too bad, because a well-thought-out straw diagram might have been able to get me through the movie?s last half-hour, in which timeless philosophical questions of free will vs. destiny, nature vs. nurture, and utilitarian ethics (would you consider killing a child if you knew it meant saving countless future lives from the monster he might grow up to be?) get raised, then chucked aside as the story hurtles to a rushed, gory conclusion that leaves nearly as many plot holes as bullet holes. Saddest of all, after their juicy mid-movie encounter at the diner, Old and Young Joe hardly ever share the screen again, and when they do, it?s mostly to exchange terse remarks and gunfire.

Looper felt to me like a maddening near-miss: It posits an impossible but fascinating-to-imagine relationship?a face-to-face encounter between one?s present and future self, in which each self must account for its betrayal of the other?and then throws away nearly all the dramatic potential that relationship offers. If someone remakes Looper as the movie it could have been in, say, 30 years, will someone from the future please FedEx it back to me?

Social Networking: 5 tips to Skyrocket Your Sales ~ Article Marketing ...

You?re probably aware of the gigantic number of users of social media ? well over a billion for the top two social networks combined ? and the waves that these platforms are making in the business world. Facebook and the micro-blogging platform Twitter count consumers from nearly every country on the planet, which is why social media marketing tips can become the catapult your business needs for leaping ahead of your competition.

With that said; there are many methods out there for getting people to join your social network; but there are fewer for getting those people to engage frequently and for a sizable fraction of them to convert to sales. Here are 5 of the more effective social media marketing tips that may help your business experience real results in the sales department:

  1. Building a useful social network requires a strong foundation; the first thing you should do is of course sign up for Facebook. Afterwards, specifically create a business page separate from a personal profile, so that fans can ?Like? you and decide to follow the progress of your business. This is precisely the platform you will be using primarily for future business-related promotions and updates to keep your growing community together and informed.
  2. The old adage ?never put all your eggs in one basket? is very timely and applicable here: Facebook is not the only place where social media marketing tips can apply ? even if it is currently the biggest. Set up social networks on YouTube to get video messages out there; given the huge increase in mobile marketing and video downloads and viewing in general, working to get subscribers to your YouTube account can be a big sales generator in the years to come. Just don?t forget the call to action at the end of your videos, reminding your viewers to click the ?Subscribe? button.
  3. Keep in mind that what you choose to write about is just as important as how you write it. Although this is true offline as well as online, it is much more important in the latter: your headlines and subheads must ?pop?. They must be vibrant and engaging while remaining truthful; they must be engrossing without telling a lie. Furthermore, your headlines must be relatively short; you can?t generate sales if people are skipping over your post because the headline didn?t grab their attention.
  4. Interacting in a timely fashion with people who take the time to comment or ask questions is absolutely essential. More often than not, the single question that one person may ask is actually the same question many more wanted to know the answer to. You further show your audience that you take your business and their concerns seriously, which will keep your retention rate higher than the business that doesn?t bother ? and more traffic almost always equals greater sales.

  5. Social media marketing tips usually center on engagement with your audience; which means making sure the contributions to your social platform are consistent - as opposed to constant. Don?t focus on the mundane, at the risk of boring your audience; but be sure to always note new developments that you think are relevant to the interests of your audience. If at any time you hit a small rut in terms of things to say or add, never hesitate to check out what your competition is doing ? and duplicate the social media marketing tips of the more successful ones.
Social media, then, when used in conjunction with search engine optimization, can easily drive you ahead of your competition. ?Be sure to make a worksheet of the best avenues to take in both directions, comprised of?maybe?5-10 of the top methods. ?

Then focus on allocating time to these over the next few months, and Google (and Facebook) will reward you for it - all with no cost other than your time (although I can't think of anything worth more than your time - but nonetheless).?

Please feel free to comment below; just keep hyperlinks out of the text body unless they're truly relevant. ?Thanks for interacting!!!

University of Cincinnati

Over millions of years, biological organisms from the chameleon and cuttlefish to the octopus and squid have developed color-changing abilities for adaptive concealment (e.g., camouflage) and communication signaling (e.g., warning or mating cues).

Over the past two decades, humans have begun to develop sophisticated e-Paper technology in electronic devices that reflect and draw upon the ambient light around you to create multiple colors, contrast and diffusion to communicate text and images.

And given the more than 100 million years head start that evolution has provided to these animals and their cellular systems, it's not surprising that e-Paper devices lag behind in optical performance, especially color generation.

In an effort to close that gap, a multidisciplinary team led by University of Cincinnati researchers is out today with a paper that aims to help biologists who work with these color-changing creatures and engineers who work with e-Paper technology. The paper "Biological vs. Electronic Adaptive Coloration: How Can One Inform the Other?" is in the "The Journal of The Royal Society Interface" (electronic version) and will be featured on the cover of the upcoming print issue.

Authors are Eric Kreit, a recent doctoral graduate in UC's College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS); Lydia M. Mthger and Roger T. Hanlon, research scientists at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass.; Patrick B. Dennis and Rajesh R. Naik, scientists at the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright Patterson Air Force Base; Eric Forsythe, scientist at the Army Research Laboratory; and Jason Heikenfeld, associate professor of electronic and computing systems, also in the University of Cincinnati's College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS).

According to UC's Kreit, "Our main goals were threefold: To allow display engineers to learn from millions of years of natural selection and evolution. To teach biologists the most advanced mechanisms and performance measurements used in human-made reflective e-Paper and to give all scientists a clearer picture of the long-term prospects for capabilities such as adaptive concealment and what can be learned from now you see me, now you don't mechanisms."

WAYS IN WHICH ANIMALS AND ELECTRONICS ARE ALIKE

One of the researchers' key findings is that there are numerous approaches to change the reflective color of a surface and that the highest-performance approaches developed by both humans and nature share some powerful common features. Both use pigment, and both change or achieve color expression by either spreading or compacting that pigment. Animals use muscle fiber to spread or compact pigment, and electronics make use of an electric field to do so.

However, even if the basic approach for color change is similar, humanity has never developed anything as complex or sophisticated as the biology and physics of cephalopod skin. (Cephalopods are a diverse ocean group and include 700 species of cuttlefish, squid and octopus and are the acknowledged masters of color change on the planet).

According to Heikenfeld, "The highest performance human-made approaches have been only recently developed, well after numerous other approaches were tried. Perhaps in the past, if we had more closely trusted nature's ability to find the best solution, we would be further along today in creating better display technology."

ANIMALS ARE EFFICIENT USERS OF AVAILABLE LIGHT

Biological organisms that change color are very efficient at using available light. The animal's skin either reflects light to achieve a bright-color effect or absorbs light to achieve stunning, multi-colored effects.

In their use of available light, the biological organisms are more efficient than electronic devices, which generally require large amounts of electric power to generate an internal/emissive light to generate bright color.

Said Roger Hanlon, "Cephalopod skin is exquisitely beautiful and radiant, and can be changed in milliseconds, all without generating any intrinsic light from within the skin; there are elegant solutions from biology waiting to be translated to our consumer and industrial world."

In fact, overall, animals "outscore" synthetic devices when it comes to sophistication and integrated systems; required energy use for color change; size scalability (cephalopods' adaptive coloration works over a wide range of sizes in the organisms' class from small-size cuttlefish to large-size octopus and squid); and surface texture (cephalopods can selectively adapt or "crinkle" their skins to match a variety of three-dimensional textures, which provides additional light scattering and shadowing).

ELECTRONIC DEVICES ACHIEVE COLORS FASTER AND ACHIEVE MORE COLORS

Human-developed technology is far superior to cephalopods or other color-adapting animals when it comes to speed. In other words, human-made electronics can achieve color and a color change faster than the response time of a biological organism.

In addition, synthetic devices can provide a greater range of colors and more efficient dark or black state. In other words, a device can achieve a black screen, but most biological organisms cannot achieve such darkened coloring. This is, in part, due to the fact that an organism like a marine animal generally has no reason, in terms of survival adaptation or signaling, to go to a dark or black state. Such an adaptation would actually make them more visible, not less, to predators.

Discover, the sixth-biggest U.S. credit?card?issuer, will pay a $14 million fine and refund $200 million directly to more than 3.5 million customers, federal authorities said Monday.

The company's call-center workers enrolled customers in the programs without their consent, misled them about the benefits and left customers thinking the products were free, regulators said.

The action was brought by the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.?Discover?said this summer that it expected an enforcement action about add-on products.

It is only the third public enforcement action by the consumer bureau, which was created under the 2010 financial overhaul law to protect consumers from excessive or hidden fees and other financial threats. The first was a similar order against Capital One, another big issuer of?cards.

American Express also expects to pay refunds and fines related to add-on products, according to its most recent quarterly filing with regulators.

Discover?is part of?Discover?Financial Services. In a statement late Friday, chairman and CEO David Nelms said: "We have worked hard to earn the loyalty of our cardmembers, and we are committed to marketing our products responsibly."

Discover's?telemarketing scripts included misleading language that confused consumers about whether they were buying a product or just agreeing to consider it, the agencies said. They said telemarketers spoke quickly during the part of the call where the prices and terms of products are described.

The order mentions four products sold by?Discover: Payment Protection, Credit Score Tracker, Identity Theft Protection and Wallet Protection. Anyone who paid for those services between Dec. 1, 2007, and Aug. 31, 2011, will be repaid at least 90 days' worth of fees. About 2 million customers will be repaid all of the fees they were charged.

In addition to the refunds and fine,?Discover?agreed to change its telemarketing approach and employ an independent auditor to oversee its compliance with the order.

Fiat, Italy govt to examine export-focused measures

MILAN/ROME (Reuters) - Italy's Fiat and the Italian government said on Saturday they will look for ways to improve the company's manufacturing efficiency, as the automaker pledged to keep building cars in Italy while shifting its focus to foreign export markets.

Fiat's decision in late August to freeze planned investments to avoid further losses in a weak car market has sparked a firestorm of criticism from trade unions and politicians.

Unions are worried about potential job losses if the company eventually shifts manufacturing to countries where wages are lower.

Fiat said in a statement it planned to "re-orient" its business model in Italy "to focus on exports, particularly outside of Europe."

That means, a person familiar with the situation said, Fiat could focus on possibly making Jeep and Chrysler models for export.

Italy's Prime Minister Mario Monti and three cabinet ministers met for five hours with Fiat chief executive Sergio Marchionne and chairman John Elkann at the prime minister's office in Rome.

At the meeting, Fiat outlined its forecasts for the Italian and European markets, focusing on the strategic prospects offered by its integration with its U.S. unit Chrysler, the statement said, without providing any details.

Fiat CEO Marchionne has previously said he does not see the Italian car market recovering until at least 2014. Fiat recently postponed the launch of its new Punto compact to 2015.

"Fiat also confirmed its strategy of investing in Italy, at the right moment, to develop new products to take full advantage of the recovery of the European market," the statement said, mentioning research and development as an example.

The Industry Ministry will set up a working group to examine how to improve Fiat's export capacity, the statement said.

Fiat plans to release full details of its new investment plans on October 30.

Marchionne and Elkann left Monti's office without speaking to journalists.

The carefully-worded statement made no mention of further production halts or temporary layoffs, which Fiat is expected to continue throughout autumn to match slack demand.

"It's a good thing that Fiat renewed its pledge to stay in Italy, where it aims to strengthen its competitiveness in research and innovation," said UILM trade union secretary Rocco Palombella in a statement.

"In effect, the company has confirmed its plans to invest in Italy at the first sign of a recovery in the European market."
