Skype disables password reset page to deal with email-based security 'vulnerability' (update)

Skype disables password reset page to deal with emailbased security hole

Skype has taken down its password reset page as it deals with a password reset exploit that can give suspicious types access to your account with only your email address. The issue was first spotted on Russian forums months earlier, but TNW has since been able to replicate the same, apparently easy to reproduce, vulnerability. Before Skype withdrew its password reset page, the only way to avoid the problem was to change your email address to something unknown by anyone. According to Skype's Heartbeat status blog, it's now investigating the issue further.

Update: Skype has released a second statement: "Early this morning we were notified of user concerns surrounding the security of the password reset feature on our website. This issue affected some users where multiple Skype accounts were registered to the same email address.

"We suspended the password reset feature temporarily this morning as a precaution and have made updates to the password reset process today so that it is now working properly. We are reaching out to a small number of users who may have been impacted to assist as necessary."

Advice For Investing In Commercial Real Estate : simsadler.net

Investing in commercial real estate is a great way to earn significant profits. Entering the world of commercial real estate, however, can demand a hefty investment on your part.

When writing up a letter of intent, make sure to keep your offer simple and straightforward, focusing on the bigger issues at first and then figuring out those pesky, little details later. You can make all your negotiations less tense, so you can agree on any of the smaller issues first.

You should take into account any potential environmental concerns. For example, the previous property owners might not have disposed of hazardous waste appropriately. As the property owner, the burden of getting these issues resolved rests on your shoulders, even if they initiated during a previous owner?s time.

Before you consider leasing or renting, look into whether or not pest control is covered in the lease. This is important in less desirable locations where rodents and/or bugs are an issue. Have your rental agent inform you of any associated policies for pest control.

Interest rates that change constantly can be the single biggest problem facing investors in commercial real estate. Current conditions, with their unpredictable rises and falls, leave investors room to make a great profit or to suffer an incredible loss. Think about this as you shop for properties.

Know that larger apartment complexes are less troublesome than a smaller one; many experts say to avoid those properties with less than 10 units. Keep in mind that all situations are distinct; however, doing your homework about a particular possibility should be the final straw in your choosing.

Don?t underestimate your relationship with private lenders or investors when you buy commercial real estate. For example, many commercial properties that are sold are unlisted, so having many people in your own network can help you know more and get inside scoops on some great deals.

You need to advertise that your commercial property is for sale to both locally and non-local people. Too many people assume that only the locals are interested in buying property in the area. There are many investors who are interested in financing properties which are outside their area as long as they are a great deal.

You can definitely gain a lot of money from commercial real estate, money that can keep you and your loved ones happy for years to come. Not only do you have to come up with a large amount of money to use as a down payment, but you also have to put time and energy into researching each investment opportunity. If you want to be sure to find success in this, then adhere to the advice given in this article.

Sim Sadler is a real estate expert and has been buying and selling commercial real estate for over 25 years, through every market you can imagine.

Hospira says FDA blocks import of Symbiq infusion pump

(Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has prohibited Hospira Inc from importing its Symbiq medication infusion pumps, which are manufactured in Costa Rica, into the United States, the company said Tuesday in a regulatory filing.

Hospira in the filing did not say why the FDA imposed the restriction. A Hospira spokesperson could not be immediately reached.

The company said the FDA's action does not restrict importation of its other medication management products, and the company does not expect it will have a material impact on its ability to achieve its 2012 financial projections.

In August, Hospira announced it received a warning letter from the FDA over quality problems at the Costa Rica plant where it makes most of its infusion pumps. Among the issues cited were alarm failures on the company's Plum brand of infusion pump.

At the time, the company said it was switching alarm components for the Plum pump, which was recalled in February 2011, and expected to complete that process by early 2013.

Hospira on November 7 said it had placed a voluntary hold on shipments of the Symbiq pumps to new U.S. customers. A day later, the FDA notified the company of the import restriction, Hospira said.

Last month, the FDA said some Symbiq models were recalled due to software issues after Hospira received reports from customers of touch screens that were not responsive, delaying therapy.

The Lake Forest, Illinois-based maker of medical devices and injectable specialty drugs said it will support the repair and replacement of Symbiq pumps to existing customers.

Hospira has been working for several years to resolve manufacturing issues at some of its plants. In February, it resumed production of injectable drugs at its Rocky Mount, North Carolina, plant after a maintenance shutdown. Manufacturing problems at that plant had let to shortages of anesthesia and other drugs for its customers.

Hospira shares were little changed in after-hours trading from Tuesday's close of $29.60 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Timeline of events in Petraeus case

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The extramarital affair that brought down David Petraeus' celebrated career last week raised many questions. Among them: when exactly the affair began, how the FBI stumbled upon the information and who was told about it. Here's a timeline of events, according to officials involved in the investigation:

___

Spring 2006 ? Paula Broadwell meets Petraeus at Harvard University where she is a graduate student. Petraeus is a lieutenant general working on a manual about counterinsurgency and is invited to give a speech about his experiences in Iraq.

January 2007 ? The Senate confirms Petraeus as the commanding general for U.S. troops in Iraq.

2008 ? Broadwell initiates a case study of Petraeus' leadership. On a visit to Washington, Petraeus invites Broadwell to join him and his team for a run along the Potomac River.

October 2008 ? Petraeus is named commander of U.S. Central Command, based at MacDill Air Force Base near Tampa, Fla., where Jill Kelley and her husband attend social events alongside the area's military elite.

June 30, 2010 ? The Senate confirms Petraeus as the new commander for war in Afghanistan. Over the next year, Broadwell expands her research of Petraeus into an authorized biography. She makes multiple trips to Afghanistan and is given unprecedented access to Petraeus and his commanders.

Sept. 6, 2011 ? Petraeus is sworn in as CIA director with his wife, Holly, by his side. Broadwell keeps in contact with Petraeus and is later invited to his office for events, including a meeting with actress Angelina Jolie.

November 2011 ? Petraeus begins an extramarital affair with Broadwell, according to retired Army Col. Steve Boylan.

Jan. 24, 2012 ? Broadwell's biography, "All In: The Education of General David Petraeus," is released.

Jan. 30, 2012 ? In an interview with her hometown paper, the Bismarck Tribune, Broadwell describes Petraeus as an inspirational figure who always takes care of his subordinates.

May 2012 ? Kelley, a Tampa socialite, starts receiving harassing emails. The FBI begins investigating soon after.

Summer 2012 ? FBI agents determine that the email trail leads to Broadwell. They come across a private Gmail account using an alias name that belongs to Petraeus. Emails between Petraeus and Broadwell lead agents to believe the two are having an affair. FBI Director Robert Mueller is notified. At some point during the investigation, the FBI interviews Petraeus and Broadwell.

July 2012 ? The affair between Petraeus and Broadwell ends, according to Petraeus' friend Boylan.

Late Summer 2012? Attorney General Eric Holder is notified. By this time, the FBI has long since concluded there was no national security breach, but continues investigating whether Petraeus had any role in the harassing emails sent to Kelley.

The week of Oct. 22, 2012 ? Broadwell has a second interview with FBI agents.

Oct. 27, 2012 ? House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., gets a call from an FBI employee notifying him of the affair. Rep. Dave Reichert, R-Wash., arranges the call after receiving a tip from another FBI official.

The week of Oct. 29, 2012 ? Petraeus is interviewed for a second time by the FBI. By this point, both Broadwell and Petraeus have acknowledged the affair to the FBI.

Oct. 31, 2012 ? Cantor's chief of staff calls the FBI chief of staff to inform him of the call.

Tuesday, Nov. 6 ? As Americans cast their ballots on Election Day, the Justice Department informs Director of National Intelligence James Clapper of the investigation. Clapper calls Petraeus and urges him to resign.

Wednesday, Nov. 7 ? The White House is first notified about the affair involving Petraeus. The retired general turns 60.

Thursday, Nov. 8 ?President Barack Obama, having returned from Chicago, is told of the affair. Petraeus meets with Obama at the White House and asks to resign.

Friday, Nov. 9 ? Obama accepts Petraeus' resignation. News of the resignation breaks before Congress is briefed. Broadwell's husband emails guests to cancel her 40th birthday party, scheduled for that weekend. By the evening, Broadwell has been publicly identified.

Saturday, Nov. 10 ? Broadwell's book, ranked 76,792 on Amazon the day before, jumps to 111.

Sunday, Nov. 11 ? Lawmakers complain in televised interviews that the FBI didn't alert them sooner to the investigation. Kelley's identity is revealed by the Associated Press, and she issues a statement asking for privacy.

A meeting to discuss the investigation is set for the following Wednesday with the FBI, CIA acting director Michael Morell and senior members of Congress.

Head of beleaguered BBC quits to try to restore trust

LONDON (Reuters) - BBC director general George Entwistle has resigned just two months into the job, after the state-funded broadcaster aired mistaken allegations of child sex abuse against a former leading politician.

The BBC was already reeling from revelations that a long-time star presenter had been a pedophile, and the conspicuous failure to apply normal journalistic standards was the last thing it needed.

The broadcaster issued a full apology on Friday, but early on Saturday Entwistle had to admit under questioning from his own journalists that he had not known in advance about the Newsnight report, weeks after being accused of being too hands-off over a previous scandal involving the same program.

By Saturday evening Entwistle was announcing his resignation, saying the unacceptable standards of the Newsnight film had damaged the public's confidence in the 90-year-old BBC.

"As the director general of the BBC, I am ultimately responsible for all content as the editor-in-chief, and I have therefore decided that the honorable thing for me to do is to step down," he said.

Entwistle succeeded Mark Thompson, set to take over as chief executive of the New York Times Co, in September and almost immediately faced one of the biggest crises in the history of the BBC, funded by a license fee paid by TV viewers.

This was the revelation by rival broadcaster ITV last month that the late Jimmy Savile, one of the most recognizable personalities on British television in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, had sexually abused young girls, some on BBC premises.

SUSPECT ARRESTED

Suggestions have surfaced of a pedophile ring inside the BBC at the time, and a cover-up. Police have launched an inquiry and detectives said they had arrested their third suspect on Sunday, a man in his 70s from Cambridgeshire in central England.

Former glam rocker Gary Glitter and comedian Freddie Starr have already been questioned and released on bail.

Entwistle was condemned for the BBC's slow response to the Savile furor and then lambasted after it emerged that Newsnight had axed a planned expose into Savile shortly after his death and that the broadcaster had gone ahead with tributes instead.

His appearance before a parliamentary committee provoked mockery, with one lawmaker saying he had shown a "lamentable lack of knowledge" of what was going on at his own organization.

Thompson has also had to explain what he knew about the Savile episode and has faced questions from staff at the New York Times over whether he is still the right person to take one of the biggest jobs in American newspaper publishing.

The knives were out for Entwistle on Friday after the BBC apologized for the mistaken allegation that an ex-politician, later identified on the Internet as a close ally of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher, had abused children.

The last straw came when he was forced to admit on the BBC morning news that he had not known - or asked - who the alleged abuser was until the name appeared in social media.

"He showed no sign of being in control the first time (over the Savile issue) and this morning's interview on the Today program, I think, was fatal, because it happened again," said Steve Hewlett, a media consultant and former BBC editor.

"You could forgive him for the Savile situation, he could have survived that if he'd shown he was on top of this situation, and he didn't," Hewlett told Reuters.

PUBLIC TRUST

Politicians said Entwistle's decision was right because it appeared that under him the BBC, long affectionately known as "Auntie" and widely respected in many parts of the world, was systematically incapable of addressing its failings.

"It is vital that credibility and public trust in this important national institution is restored," Culture Secretary Maria Miller said in a statement. "It is now crucial that the BBC puts the systems in place to ensure it can make first class news and current affairs programs."

John Whittingdale, chairman of parliament's powerful media committee, said the crisis had hurt public trust and confidence, and Entwistle's departure did not spell the end of the matter.

"There are still a lot of questions which need answering. Who did take the decision to approve that (Newsnight) program because quite plainly it was a deeply flawed decision," he said.

The crisis at the BBC is the latest drama to hit the British media industry after two years of soul-searching sparked by a phone-hacking scandal at Rupert Murdoch's newspaper empire.

Any allegations of lack of integrity are serious for a broadcaster that is widely respected and funded by the public. A judge-led inquiry into media standards prompted by the illegality at a Murdoch tabloid is due to be published soon.

Chris Patten, head of the BBC governing body and a prominent political figure, said accepting Entwistle's resignation had made for one of the saddest nights of his public life.

"George has very honorably offered us his resignation because of the unacceptable mistakes and the unacceptable shoddy journalism which has caused so much controversy," said Patten.

"He has behaved as editor with huge honor and courage and would that the rest of the world always behaved the same."

Patten announced that Tim Davie, the BBC's director of Audio and Music, would be the acting director general.

'The Voice' Top 12 Party and Perform at the House of Blues | Movies ...

Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, CeeLo Green, and Blake Shelton perform during a special live event celebrating the top 12 artists on November 9th in Los Angeles.

Jordin Althaus/NBC/NBCU

November 10, 2012 11:50 AM ET

"We?re now 12 out of 45,000 people, so over this whole trip we?ve really become a family," Nicholas David, from The Voice's Team Cee Lo, told Rolling Stone as he stood by the bar at the House Of Blues on Thursday night. Seeing the odds in those terms, the rigorous road that the 12 finalists for the title of "The Voice" in Season Three have traveled becomes clear. So they certainly deserved the night of celebration they got this week when, after making it to the next round of live shows, the dozen joined their coaches at House of Blues Los Angeles for a performance and party.

The party was more for journalists and industry types, however, with the coaches and finalists putting on the evening?s entertainment after making their way to the venue and going through rounds of interviews. Terry McDermott, one of the three finalists from Blake Shelton?s team, planned to relish this soiree anyway.

"I?ve been in situations in music where you saw your future mapped out in front of you. My band came over here with a record deal, for us the route was very clear," McDermott told Rolling Stone. "Then I?ve also seen where that?s been taken away and we?ve been in a position where you don?t know what the future holds. So nights like this, working or not, I?ll savor every second of it.?

For Michaela Paige, who earned Shelton?s save to move on, the night brought on a mix of feelings. "Being on this show is an emotional roller coaster," she said. "A night like tonight comes along and I?m standing up there on the verge of going home with two of the most amazing talents that I?ve ever met and I?m sure in my head that I?m preparing my goodbye speech, to be saved is just the biggest relief. I am so grateful and thankful."

There is little time on The Voice to bask in credit, however. Several of the finalists, including Paige, were already looking ahead to next week. "I am so ready to perform on Monday and show America and Blake why I deserve to be here. I can tell you that on Monday, surprises are in order," she said. "Keeping true to who I am as an artist, that pop/rock, that soul, that blues, that?s what I?m all about and that?s what I?m gonna showcase."

Also looking ahead was Team Cee Lo?s Cody Belew, who, like Paige, made it through with help from his coach. "We?re pushing all cylinders, both Cee Lo and I, especially for the next week?s performance, cause every week we?re just gonna bring that shock value that he?s known for and that I?ve always wanted to do," he said.

Belew is looking beyond next week as well, and if he does go forward, he has a particular song in mind for the finals. "The one song that I?ve kind of got on a back burner slowly simmering, is 'The Show Must Go On,' by Queen, because I just want to nail the shit to the wall," he said.?

If he does make it to the finals, he fully expects to see Amanda Brown there. "She is the baddest bitch in town and that rhymes all the way to the bank. She is my very best friend here," he says. "We joke all the time about going straight to the end together, we?ve got this secret song together we want to do that was made famous by two other rivals."

Brown, the show?s favorite after her virtuoso performance of "Dream On" this week, has some of her own song choices in mind going forward. "Maybe 'Alone' by Heart, I?d like to maybe do 'Barracuda' also," she says. "I?d love to do a Queen song. There are so many great songs."

She'd love to sing with Belew on the show ? "Cody?s my buddy," she said ? but when the Amanda Brown album comes down the line, and it will come whether she wins or not, she has loftier collaborations in mind. And who would she most like to work with? Steven Tyler.

The refreshingly humble Trevin Hunte also has dream musical partners in mind for when he makes his debut album. "Some of my idols like Beyonc?, Rihanna, even my amazing coach Cee Lo, I would love to do a duet or collab with them," he said.

Hunte is another favorite, but you wouldn?t know it from looking at his reaction last night when he was voted forward by fans. He may have been the only one surprised by the choice, but that?s because he makes a conscious effort to tune out all the internet buzz. "I kind of try and stay away from that because it can be positive and negative, so I don?t really watch on Twitter or read any comments," he says.

Hunte need only look to fellow competitor McDermott for accolades. "Trevin Hunte has absolutely floored me with his voice, just incredible," McDermott said. "I would love to find a way of combining our rock and R&B vocals that works in a song."

Some of the veterans, like David and McDermott, know that at this point the ride can end at any time, so they will just stay on as long as the show will have them. "Right at the moment, I just want to ride this roller coaster until I fall off, frankly," McDermott said.

It?s a thought seconded by David. "The whole thing is an honor. It just keeps unfolding and all I can do is eat it and it tastes good," he said.

Software Converts Your Speech into Chinese

Ever wondered what you'd sound like if you were fluent in Chinese, French or another language you don't know? New software that's in development might give you an idea. Microsoft has created a program designed to provide on-the-fly, spoken translations, in the user's own voice.

"We may not have to wait until the 22nd century for a usable equivalent of Star Trek's universal translator," Rick Rashid, Microsoft's chief research officer,?wrote in a blog post?Nov. 8. Microsoft's translator still makes errors at a noticeable rate, but significantly improves on previous speech translators, Rashid said.?

"The results can sometimes be humorous," he said. "Still, the technology has developed to be quite useful."

Rashid presented the software on Oct. 25, getting some of his remarks translated into Mandarin Chinese during a conference held in Tianjin, China. In a video Microsoft posted online, the software's Chinese voice doesn't sound exactly like Rashid, but it does have the same general tone:?

One of the biggest challenges in making the software came in getting it to recognize what users say, Rashid said. Computer scientists have been working on this problem virtually since computers were invented, and the fruits of a generation of research include the automated systems that U.S. banks use for call-in customer service ("Please enter or say your account number now"). In those systems, the speech recognizer only has to understand digits and perhaps some menu options, such as "make a transfer" or "bank hours."

It's more difficult for computers to understand freewheeling conversation, however. Until recently,?speech-recognizing programs?could only understand 75 to 80 percent of the words a person might say during a conversation, Rashid said. Microsoft Research has been working on improving that rate, he said, by using Deep Neural Networks, which are connected networks of computer processors that act a little like the connections between cells in human and animal brains. Google used the same technique this summer to build a computer that?taught itself to recognize cat pictures?on the Internet.

Microsoft's speech recognizer can correctly identify 86 to 88 percent of the words in arbitrary speech, Rashid said. "While still far from perfect, this is the most dramatic change in accuracy since the introduction of hidden Markov modeling in 1979," he said, referring to a landmark moment in the history of speech-recognition research. Hidden Markov modeling, a statistical technique, allowed researchers to incorporate recordings from several people into their speech models, Rashid explained.

After identifying what the user is saying in English, Microsoft's translator then finds matching words in Chinese and rearranges the words to the grammatically correct order in Chinese, Rashid said.?

To train the?translator?to match his voice, Rashid had to record an hour of himself speaking in English, he said. The software also required a recording of a few hours of a native Chinese speaker.?

"There is still much work to be done, but the technology is very promising, and we hope that in a few years we will have systems that can completely break down language barriers," Rashid said.

(AP) ? The resignation of CIA Director David Petraeus has brought a sudden and unexpected end to the public career of a four-star general who led U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq and was thought to be a potential candidate for president.

Petraeus admitted to an extramarital affair in tendering his resignation, which President Barack Obama accepted Friday.

Petraeus carried on the affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell, a reserve Army officer, according to several U.S. officials with knowledge of the situation. They spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss publicly the investigation that led to the resignation.

The FBI discovered the relationship by monitoring Petraeus' emails, after being alerted Broadwell may have had access to his personal email account, two of the officials said.

Broadwell did not respond to voice mail or email messages seeking comment. Broadwell's biography, "All In: The Education of General David Petraeus," was written with Vernon Loeb, a Washington Post editor, and published in January.

Lawmakers from both parties joined Obama in praising Petraeus. Obama said in a statement that Petraeus had provided "extraordinary service to the United States for decades" and had given a lifetime of service that "made our country safer and stronger."

CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell will serve as acting director, Obama said. Morell was the key CIA aide in the White House to President George W. Bush during the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

"I am completely confident that the CIA will continue to thrive and carry out its essential mission," Obama said.

The resignation comes at a sensitive time. The administration and the CIA have struggled to defend security and intelligence lapses before the attack that killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three others. It was an issue during the presidential campaign that ended with Obama's re-election Tuesday.

The CIA has come under intense scrutiny for providing the White House and other administration officials with talking points that led them to say the Benghazi attack was a result of a film protest, not a militant terror attack. It has become clear that the CIA was aware the attack was distinct from the film protests roiling across other parts of the Muslim world.

Morell rather than Petraeus now is expected to testify at closed congressional briefings next week on the assault on the consulate in Benghazi, which occurred on the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Petraeus, who turned 60 on Wednesday, has been married for 38 years to Holly Petraeus, whom he met when he was a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. She was the daughter of the academy superintendent. They have two children, and their son led an infantry platoon in Afghanistan.

The retired general told his staffers in a statement that he was guilty of "extremely poor judgment" in engaging in the affair. "Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours." He said he had offered his resignation to Obama on Thursday and the president accepted it Friday.

Administration officials said the White House was first notified about the Petraeus affair on Wednesday, the day after the election. Obama, who returned to the White House that evening after spending Election Day in Chicago, wasn't informed until Thursday morning.

For the director of the CIA, being engaged in an extramarital affair is considered a serious breach of security and a counterintelligence threat. If a foreign government had learned of the affair, the reasoning goes, Petraeus or Broadwell could have been blackmailed or otherwise compromised. Military justice considers conduct such as an extramarital affair to be possible grounds for court-martial.

Failure to resign also could create the perception for the rank and file that such behavior is acceptable.

At FBI headquarters, spokesman Paul Bresson declined to comment on the information that the affair had been discovered in the course of an investigation by the bureau.

Holly Petraeus is known for her work helping military families. She joined the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to set up an office dedicated to helping service members with financial issues.

Though Obama made no direct mention of Petraeus' reason for resigning, he offered his thoughts and prayers to the general and his wife, saying that Holly Petraeus had "done so much to help military families through her own work. I wish them the very best at this difficult time."

Petraeus, who became CIA director in September 2011, was known as a shrewd thinker and hard-charging competitor. His management style was recently lauded in a Newsweek article by Broadwell.

The article listed Petraeus' "rules for living." No. 5 was: "We all make mistakes. The key is to recognize them, to learn from them, and to take off the rear view mirrors ? drive on and avoid making them again."

In the preface to her book, Broadwell said she first met Petraeus in the spring of 2006. She was a graduate student at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard; he was visiting the university to discuss his experiences in Iraq and a new counterinsurgency manual he was working on.

She had graduated from West Point with academic, fitness, and leadership honors, according to a biography posted on her publisher's website that lists authors available for speaking engagements.

The biography said she had "lived, worked, or traveled in more than 60 countries during more than 15 years of military service and work in geopolitical analysis and counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations." It said she had spent time with the U.S. intelligence community, U.S. Special Operations Command and FBI Joint Terrorism Task Forces.

Harvard invited some students to meet with Petraeus, and Broadwell was among them because of her military background, which she wrote included being recalled to active duty three times to work on counterterrorism issues after the Sept. 11 attacks.

"I had since joined the Army Reserve and begun graduate studies with the intent of returning either to active duty or to the policy world," she wrote in the preface. She introduced herself and described her research interests. He gave her his card and offered to connect her with others working on the same issues.

"I later discovered that he was famous for this type of mentoring and networking, especially with aspiring soldier-scholars. He immediately responded to the email, inviting me to bounce ideas off him. I took full advantage of his open-door policy to seek insight and share perspectives," Broadwell wrote.

In 2008, she wrote, she was pursuing a Ph.D. in public policy and embarking on a case study of Petraeus' leadership. At one point, she said, he invited her for a run along the Potomac River with his team while he was in Washington.

"I'd earned varsity letters in cross-country and indoor and outdoor track and finished at the top of my class for athletics at West Point; I wanted to see if he could keep stride during an interview. Instead it became a test for me." He eventually increased the pace "until the talk turned to heavy breathing and we reached a 6-minute-per-mile pace. It was a signature Petraeus move. I think I passed the test, but I didn't bother to transcribe the interview."

After Obama put Petraeus in charge in Afghanistan in 2010, Broadwell decided to expand her research into an authorized biography.

Broadwell made many trips to Afghanistan, with unprecedented access to Petraeus, and also spent time with his commanders across the country. When Petraeus took the job at the CIA, she remained in close contact with him, sometimes invited to his office for events like his meeting with Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie.

With the book done, she told friends she had been concentrating on turning part of her research on Petraeus into a dissertation, to complete her doctorate.

Petraeus, in his email, told his CIA employees that he treasured his work with them "and I will always regret the circumstances that brought that work with you to an end."

The director of national intelligence, James Clapper, said Petraeus' departure represented "the loss of one of our nation's most respected public servants. From his long, illustrious Army career to his leadership at the helm of CIA, Dave has redefined what it means to serve and sacrifice for one's country."

Other CIA directors have resigned under unflattering circumstances. CIA Director Jim Woolsey left over the discovery of a KGB mole, and director John Deutch left after the revelation that he had kept classified information on his home computer.

Before Obama brought Petraeus to the CIA, he was credited with salvaging the U.S. war in Iraq.

"His inspirational leadership and his genius were directly responsible ? after years of failure ? for the success of the surge in Iraq," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Friday.

President George W. Bush sent Petraeus to Iraq in February 2007, at the peak of sectarian violence, to turn things around as head of U.S. forces. He oversaw an influx of 30,000 U.S. troops and moved troops out of big bases so they could work more closely with Iraqi forces scattered throughout Baghdad.

Petraeus' success was credited with paving the way for the eventual U.S. withdrawal.

After Iraq, Bush made Petraeus commander of U.S. Central Command, overseeing all U.S. military operations in the greater Middle East, including Afghanistan and Pakistan.

When the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, was relieved of duty in June 2010 for comments in a magazine story, Obama asked Petraeus to take over in Kabul and the general quickly agreed.

In the months that followed, Petraeus helped lead the push to add more U.S. troops to that war and dramatically boost the effort to train Afghan soldiers and police.

The Senate and House intelligence committees were briefed on Petraeus' resignation only after the news was reported in the media, said a congressional staffer, speaking anonymously because the staffer was not authorized to publicly discuss the sensitive briefings.

House Homeland Security Chairman Peter King, R-N.Y., said he regretted Petraeus' resignation, calling him "one of America's most outstanding and distinguished military leaders and a true American patriot."

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., also regretted the resignation but gave Morell high marks, too.

Morell had served as deputy director since May 2010, after holding a number of top roles, including director for the agency's analytical arm, which helps feed intelligence into the president's daily brief. He also worked as an aide to former CIA Director George Tenet.

"I wish President Obama had not accepted this resignation," Feinstein said of Petraeus, "but I understand and respect the decision."

Meet Xenoceratops: Canada's newest horned dinosaur

ScienceDaily (Nov. 8, 2012) ? Scientists have named a new species of horned dinosaur (ceratopsian) from Alberta, Canada. Xenoceratops foremostensis (Zee-NO-Sare-ah-tops) was identified from fossils originally collected in 1958. Approximately 20 feet long and weighing more than 2 tons, the newly identified plant-eating dinosaur represents the oldest known large-bodied horned dinosaur from Canada.

Research describing the new species is published in the October 2012 issue of the Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences.

"Starting 80 million years ago, the large-bodied horned dinosaurs in North America underwent an evolutionary explosion," said lead author Dr. Michael Ryan, curator of vertebrate paleontology at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History. "Xenoceratops shows us that even the geologically oldest ceratopsids had massive spikes on their head shields and that their cranial ornamentation would only become more elaborate as new species evolved."

Xenoceratops (Xeno + ceratops) means "alien horned-face," referring to the strange pattern of horns on its head and the scarcity of horned dinosaur fossils from this part of the fossil record. It also honors the Village of Foremost, located close to where the dinosaur was discovered. Xenoceratops had a parrot-like beak with two long brow horns above its eyes. A large frill protruded from the back of its skull featuring two huge spikes.

"Xenoceratops provides new information on the early evolution of ceratopsids, the group of large-bodied horned dinosaurs that includes Triceratops," said co-author Dr. David Evans of the Royal Ontario Museum and University of Toronto. "The early fossil record of ceratopsids remains scant, and this discovery highlights just how much more there is to learn about the origin of this diverse group."

The new dinosaur is described from skull fragments from at least three individuals from the Foremost Formation originally collected by Dr. Wann Langston Jr. in the 1950s, and is currently housed in the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, Canada. Ryan and Evans stumbled upon the undescribed material more than a decade ago and recognized the bones as a new type of horned dinosaur. Evans later discovered a 50-year-old plaster field jacket at the Canadian Museum of Nature containing more skull bones from the same fossil locality and had them prepared in his lab at the Royal Ontario Museum.

This dinosaur is just the latest in a series of new finds being made by Ryan and Evans as part of their Southern Alberta Dinosaur Project, which is designed to fill in gaps in our knowledge of Late Cretaceous dinosaurs and study their evolution. This project focuses on the paleontology of some of the oldest dinosaur-bearing rocks in Alberta, which is less intensely studied than that of the famous badlands of Dinosaur Provincial Park and Drumheller.

"This discovery of a previously unknown species also drives home the importance of having access to scientific collections," says co-author Kieran Shepherd, curator of paleobiology for the Canadian Museum of Nature, which holds the specimen. "The collections are an untapped source of new material for study, and offer the potential for many new discoveries."

Xenoceratops was identified by a team comprising palaeontologists Dr. Michael J. Ryan, curator of vertebrate paleontology at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History; and Dr. David Evans, curator, vertebrate palaeontology of the Department of Natural History at the Royal Ontario Museum; as well as Kieran Shepherd, curator of paleobiology for the Canadian Museum of Nature.
