Romney Will Honor Obama's Amnesty

Although his website says he?ll ?enforce the law? and ?address the 11 million illegal immigrants in America in a civil and resolute manner that respects the rule of law,? GOP candidate Mitt Romney will honor President Obama?s recent amnesty for ?young? illegal aliens.

According to?the Washington Times, Romney has promised illegals he will not deport those who received the Obama amnesty, and will also pass immigration reform during his first 18 months in office.

Support for Obama?s amnesty is no surprise given Romney?s leftist position on immigration, which he discloses in great detail at his website.

Please, Stay a While

Reported the Times, Romney said ?he will not deport illegal immigrants to whom President Obama has granted temporary legal status under his new non-deportation policy, and also set a deadline of passing a broader immigration bill in his first 18 months in office.?

It marks the first softening of Mr. Romney's immigration stance since he took a hard line in the primaries, saying illegal immigrants should not gain legal status.

Romney ducked the question of whether the amnesty will stand as policy, the Times said. ?But on Monday he told the editorial board of the Denver Post that those who received ?deferred action? ? an official notice that they are not going to be deported and can live and work in the U.S., though they are not actually deemed to be here legally ? ?should expect the visa to continue to be valid? if he is elected.?

?The people who have received the special visa that the president has put in place, which is a two-year visa, should expect that the visa would continue to be valid. I?m not going to take something that they've purchased,? Mr. Romney said. ?Before those visas have expired we will have the full immigration reform plan that I've proposed.?

Mr. Obama?s deferred action plan took effect Aug. 15, which means Mr. Romney has given himself a soft deadline of summer 2014 to get an immigration bill through Congress.

On Immigration, Romney on the Left

Romney is clearly angling for the ?Latino? vote, and trying not to appear ?racist,? as those who demand ?immigration reform? call those who want the border with Mexico sealed.

But his position is consistent with the material at his website. ?America is a nation of immigrants,? the immigration section begins, peddling the the standard neoconservative line. It continues,

We are not a nation bound by ethnicity, but one bound by the idea that all people are endowed by their Creator with the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That idea brought many of our forefathers to America and moves so many today to wait in line to come to our country. Welcoming newcomers who share our ideals and work hard to secure a better life for themselves and their families is part of our heritage. A strong legal immigration system is an integral component of what makes America exceptional.

According to Romney, Americans lack the brains and talent to fill the ?high-skill? jobs on which its modern economy depends. ?We do not grant enough visas to high-skill job creators and innovators our economy needs to make up for labor shortages and gaps in skills,? the website avers.

Plus, the current system sends away the great majority of the over 300,000 foreign students who are earning advanced degrees at U.S. universities. And the system for bringing in temporary, seasonal workers is so cumbersome and time-consuming, that too often an employer finds that harvest or tourist season passes before temporary worker visas are approved.

So Romney will open the borders for those from abroad with advanced degrees. ?To ensure that America continues to lead the world in innovation and economic dynamism, a Romney administration would press for an immigration policy designed to maximize America?s economic potential,? the website promises.

Foreign-born residents with advanced degrees start companies, create jobs, and drive innovation at a high rate. While lawful immigrants comprise about 8 percent of the population, immigrants start 16 percent of our top-performing, high-technology companies, hold the position of CEO or lead engineer in 25 percent of high-tech firms, and produce over 25 percent of all patent applications filed from the United States.

Romney's website claims the ?the United States is projected to face a shortage of 230,000 science and technology workers by 2018.??

At the same time, we have set the caps on high-skill visas so low that, for some countries, an entire year?s quota has been filled in an hour. ?Mitt Romney will ask Congress to raise the caps on visas for highly skilled immigrants.

The website also says Romney will ?discourage illegal immigration? by completing a ?high-tech fence? to stop border jumpers. Then again, the website vows to unite families on a ?timely basis? and ?speed the processing of applications by eliminating the red tape that is keeping immediate families apart.?

Mitt Romney will work with Congress to give legal permanent residents the same priority as citizens when applying to bring husbands, wives, and minor children to the United States.

Mitt Romney will reallocate green cards to family of citizens and legal permanent residents.

Obama?s Amnesty

The amnesty that Romney will honor took effect on Aug. 15. Almost immediately, hordes of illegals lined up to claim squatter?s rights on U.S. soil. About 1.7 million illegals are eligible, the New York Times reported. They were required to meet a short list of criteria. An illegal must be under 31 years old as of June 15, 2012, but had to have entered the U.S. illegally before age 16. He must also have lived in the country since at least June 15, 2007 and been here on June 15, 2012. The criteria also require school attendance or graduation or military service. An illegal cannot have committed a ?felony, significant misdemeanor, three or more other misdemeanors,? and he cannot ?pose a threat to national security or public safety.?

President Obama announced the policy in June after a year of preparatory work that included his top deputies announcing they had no intention of enforcing immigration laws, and indeed had essentially declared the DREAM Act law. That full-scale amnesty failed in the U.S. Senate in December, 2010.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced that she had implemented the DREAM Act?s criteria to justify permitting illegals to stay in the country. Then, John Morton, director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, told his agents that they had ?prosecutorial discretion? to ignore border jumping.

In August, 2011, Obama halted more than 300,000 deportations. Less than a year later, he gave illegals a free pass to stay in the country.

Video: NAACP: Ex-felons disenfranchised

>> we mentioned at the top of the hour a judge in pennsylvania put a temporarily hold on a tough voter i.d. law ordering it not be enforced in this year's presidential election. there's another large group of potential voters, 4.5 million people according to a new report, who are not allowed to vote. their felons who served time in jail. almost half of those affected are african-american. the naacp is launching a campaign to restore voting rights to those felons. joining me right now is the naacp president. a lot of african-american lawmakers, but this came up during the fox news debate, january 16th , the republican primary . rick santorum actually took it on governor romney . let me play what happened during that time.

>> the bill i voted on was the martin luther king voting rights bill. this was a provision that particularly targeted african-americans, and i voted to allow them to have their voting rights back once they completed their sentence.

>> governor romney , 30 seconds to respond.

>> i don't think people who have committed violent crimes should be allowed to vote again. that's my own view.

>> rick santorum was calling out romney on that saying he changed his position there. this is not just kept in the confines of black community or within the democratic party .

>> no, that's right. rick santorum is for this. jeb bush and charlie crist made it happen in florida . governor scott turned the clock back and took the right to vote back from formerly incarcerated people. it's outrageous. this is a kuncountry where we believe voting is a right and we believe all people should have a second chance. the notion that a sigts governor like governor scott would undo what his republican colleague just did, roll the clock back and take the vote away from tens of thousands of formerly incarcerated people who could stroet vote in two-thirds of the states in this country are outrageous. that's why we push this issue here and across the country.

>> florida , virginia, iowa and kentucky are the only states where former felons don't automatically get their rights back after serving their sentences. we were looking at pennsylvania, and you had elderly people there, and in wisconsin came out and said i've been voting my he whole life. i'm 88 and 90 years old, and now i can't vote. latino voters say i'm put under this requirement possibly that cannot be obtained. i cannot get my i.d. under these circumstances. is it harder to get people to support felons in some cases who have been convicted of obviously violent crimes? is that part of the roadblock at all or not?

>> yeah. what helps here is for folks to really focus on just what a wide swath of people and month gets impacted. you know, we heard from charles dutton today on the tv show "the rock" back in the '90s who for 31 years after he got out of prison could not vote paying millions of dollars and talking about how he was subjected to taxation without representation even after he served his time. it helps folks to focus on the history. these laws were put in place for a reason. they were put in place as a wave right after the civil war . in states like virginia you talked about earlier it said quite plainly the person that made the argument for this law in 1901 made it very plain. he said because of this law, the darky will be zeroed out as a factor in our state's politics in five years and he said how he would support white supremacy as a norm across the state. these laws were never about ex-felon bans but affecting the black vote. here's in florida the first governor to expand the use pushed it in 1865 . it was for him about pushing off negro suffrage. that's what we're dealing with here, is a vestage of jim crow we have to get rid of.

>> thank you so much for your time. greatly appreciate it, ben.

Wall Street jumps as U.S. manufacturing expands

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks advanced on Monday after a surprise expansion in U.S. manufacturing last month eased concerns about the economy and offset a gloomier outlook in Asia and Europe.

U.S. manufacturing expanded in September for the first time since May as new orders and employment picked up, an Institute for Supply Management report showed.

Financial stocks led the market's advance with Goldman Sachs Group up 4 percent at $118.28 after the weekly Barron's said Goldman shares could rise at least 25 percent in the next year as capital markets improve.

The ISM's index rose to 51.5 from 49.6 in August, topping expectations for a reading of 49.7, according to a Reuters poll, and breaking above the 50 mark that separates expansion from contraction.

"Numerically that is a pretty small amount," said Peter Jankovskis, co-chief investment officer at Oakbrook Investments in lisle, Illinois. "But in terms of looking at the number, it's the difference between seeing contraction and seeing growth. So psychologically that's pretty important."

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> gained 152.80 points, or 1.14 percent, to 13,589.93. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> rose 14.10 points, or 0.98 percent, to 1,454.77. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> added 20.77 points, or 0.67 percent, to 3,137.00.

The figure came after a survey from Markit showed U.S. manufacturing ended its worst quarter in three years in September as foreign demand for U.S. goods fell sharply.

The U.S. data followed surveys in the euro zone that showed manufacturing slackened in the three months to September while Asia's factories are continuing to struggle in the face of tepid demand from the United States and Europe. The data suggested the euro zone may be moving toward recession and showed a seventh straight quarter of slowing growth in China.

"The U.S. economy is growing at a slow pace, but it is still growing. The ISM number suggests that things are not that bad," said Adam Sarhan, chief executive at Sarhan Capital in New York.

The national ISM survey is especially heartening after some weak regional surveys last month. The Chicago PMI, a survey which measures business activity in the Midwest, showed its first contraction since 2009 in September.

The gain on the first day of the final quarter of 2012 comes after stocks closed a strong third quarter, helped by stimulative measures from the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank. The S&P 500 finished the quarter up 5.8 percent, its best third quarter since 2010.

"Despite a recent spate of weaker-than-expected data from across the world, markets are looking forward," said Sarhan. "There is a lot of hope that the worst-case scenario is off the table not only for now, but for good."

Ceradyne Inc shares gained 43 percent to $34.91 on news the company will be acquired by 3M Co for $860 million.

The Defense Department on Friday awarded United Launch Alliance, which is a 50-50 joint venture of Lockheed Martin Corp and Boeing Co , a $1.17 billion contract to provide satellite launches using its Delta IV and Atlas V rockets. Boeing shares gained 1.1 percent to $70.38.

KYOCERA Implements Renewable Energy Technology in Launch of US-Japan Smart-Grid

Kyocera Corporation, the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) of Japan and a number of other companies, research institutes and local governments involved announced the start of operations of a state-of-the-art, international smart-grid demonstration project in Los Alamos, New Mexico (U.S.A.).

The project is a collaborative effort between NEDO, the New Mexico state government, the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) - a national research center which is run under the umbrella of the U.S. Department of Energy.

It aims for the wider implementation of renewable energy and the promotion of energy conservation through the use of smart grid-related technologies.

Specifically, technologies that can provide a significant portion of renewable power for the electric grid to meet a community's residential need. Data collection and analysis is set to run until March 2014, at which time opportunities will then be provided for other companies and institutions to utilize the resources to conduct further academic research and product testing.

On September 17, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to mark the launch of the project which was attended by New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez, NEDO Chairman Kazuo Furukawa, Congressman Ben Ray Lujan, LANL Director Dr. Charles McMillan, Kyocera Vice President Tatsumi Maeda and a number of other prominent public and private sector figures.

Overview of the Project
The project is located at three sites in Los Alamos and Albuquerque, of which Kyocera is participating in two: the Smart-Grid Demonstration and the Smart House Demonstration in Los Alamos.

Furthermore, Kyocera will be commissioned to lead the Evaluation of Distributed Energy Resource (Photovoltaics, etc.) within the Collective Research portion of the overall project.

The Smart-Grid Demonstration in Los Alamos consists of a power supply micro-grid which uses power distribution lines from a large-scale solar power plant to utilize related technologies and performance, and to minimize the effects of power output fluctuations. Kyocera supplied a 910kW multicrystalline silicon solar module array1.

Furthermore, as the site of the solar power plant will be built over a reclaimed waste disposal landfill, Kyocera applied its expertise in selecting and installing base mounting optimized for dynamic soil conditions.

For the Smart House Demonstration in Los Alamos, Kyocera constructed a hybrid energy management system which uses a 3.4kW residential solar power generating system, 24kWh lithium-ion storage battery and an energy-efficient heat storage unit.

By operating a Home Energy Management System (HEMS) equipped with communication equipment and sensors, the Smart House helps to optimize energy usage from the solar power generating system, storage battery, power grid and smart appliances that allow for electric demand in the house to be responsive to smart grid signals.

"In this project, we will demonstrate how a smart house can play an important role from the demand side in a smart grid, where renewable energy such as solar power will be significantly implemented in the future," stated Kyocera Corporation Vice President and General Manager of the company's Solar Energy Group, Tatsumi Maeda, during a speech at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

"This smart house project was established to demonstrate the next generation of energy management by using the newest technologies."

Kyocera has been developing its solar energy business and supplying solar power products across the globe since 1975. Since then, the company has shipped roughly 3GW of solar modules, which is the equivalent of supplying a solar power generating system to roughly 900,000 homes2.

Born out of the company's many years of experience in the renewable energy industry, Kyocera's high-quality, highly reliable products and technological knowhow will be utilized to help contribute to the success of this smart-grid project.

1 The full solar power generating system is 1MW; the remaining 90kW is comprised of 9 other 10kW systems in order to compare the performance of different types of solar modules.

2 Based on a 3.4kW per household solar power generating system.

String of Iraq car bomb blasts kill at least 32

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Bombings and shootings killed more than 32 people across Iraq on Sunday, underscoring the government's struggle with a stubborn insurgency more than nine months after the last U.S. troops withdrew.

In Taji, 20 km (12 miles) north of the capital Baghdad, bombs in three parked cars went off separately, killing 11 people and wounding 24, including several policemen.

Reuters footage of the scene of one of the explosions showed the remains of an exploded car surrounded by several completely and partially destroyed houses and cars.

Taji has one of Iraq's largest military airbases but the bombing hit a civilian neighborhood.

"A car bomb entered the area and no one... noticed this. Why did that happen? All the houses were destroyed," said Khadiar Abas, owner of one of the damaged homes.

In Baghdad, a suicide car bomb and two parked car bombs went off, killing eight people including a police officer and wounding another 11.

Another blast targeted a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims as it passed through the town of Madaen, about 30 km (20 miles) southeast of Baghdad, killing two passers-by and wounding another ten, including seven Iranians.

A suicide bomber in a car blew himself up in the city of Kut, 150 km (95 miles) southeast of Baghdad, killing four policemen, police and local officials said.

No group claimed responsibility for the raft of attacks, but a local al Qaeda affiliate and other Sunni Islamist groups have carried out at least one major assault a month since the last American troops left in December.

Al Qaeda's local wing, the Islamic State of Iraq, says it has begun a new offensive against mainly Shi'ite targets. Security experts say it has benefited from the conflict in Syria, which has given al-Qaeda the pretext to seek more money and arms from Sunni tribes, politicians and governments.

Security had been tightened in Baghdad and other provinces after dozens of inmates, including convicted members of al Qaeda, fought their way out of a prison in the northern city of Tikrit on Friday using weapons officials said had been smuggled in during family visits.

Two more policemen were killed when a car bomb went off in the town of Balad Ruz, 90 km (55 miles) northeast of Baghdad.

In Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, a parked car bomb and two roadside bombs blew up separately, killing a civilian and wounding six.

The last major attacks occurred on September 9, in the capital when a series of bombs in mainly Shi'ite districts ended one of the bloodiest days of the year with more than 100 killed across the country.

Violence in Iraq has eased since its height in 2006-2007 when sectarian fighting killed thousands of people, but Sunni Islamists are still seeking to undermine the Shi'ite-led government.
