92% Silver Linings Playbook

All Critics (220) | Top Critics (50) | Fresh (195) | Rotten (16)

It's a rom-com that succeeds in revitalizing that discredited genre where so many others have failed, injecting it with the grit and emotion of realist drama rather than with amped-up whimsy or social satire or montages of people walking on the beach.

Silver Linings Playbook tells us that happily-ever-after may depend on finding people who coexist with our lunacy, not ones who can lead us out of it. In any case, it's crazy good.

A crazy beaut of a comedy that brims with generosity and manages to circumvent predictability at every turn.

An edgy romantic dramedy that suits our anxious times.

This meaningful film keeps the laughs, giddy anxiousness and warm butterflies from the trailer and sustains it all through two full hours of a love story.

I suppose the phrase 'serious romantic comedy' sounds like a paradox. But that's exactly what 'Silver Linings Playbook' is: an intelligent, edgy dark comedy with romance at its core.

This is a rom-com dressed up as an Oscar-baiting "dramedy". It's a good rom-com thanks to it's edge... but occasionally has the bad traits of a bad rom-com.

Silver Linings Playbook puts the "fun" in "dysfunction." And sure, that sounds glib, but actually, it's a rather extraordinary achievement. Especially when you're skirting on the edges of sanity.

A bittersweet pill that's a mixture of an endearing family drama and modern romance that's an absolute delight.

tows the line of conventional, feel-good Hollywood rom-com, albeit dressed up in just enough art-house quirk to make it feel like something slightly radical

A reminder that 'sanity' doesn't make your flaws any more orderly.

Silver Linings Playbook is a fine, funny film, and one that should charm viewers who haven't been tricked by all those Oscar nominations into anticipating it as some kind of world-changing work of art for the ages.

David O. Russell's latest buzz film straddles a fine line between farce and kitchen-sink drama before settling into a groove that gets under one's skin.

It starts to fray about halfway through as it shifts into a more conventional mode, taking on the usual trappings of the genre and making its way to a predictable resolution

Both charming and gritty... Cooper is edgy, while Lawrence is dynamite

If there's one reason why you should see this film, it's to admire the wonderful performances from Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence.

Cooper and Lawrence Shine in Linings.

How To Make A Mobile Version Of Your Blog For FREE

With the number of people online, using mobile phones is increasing day by day it has become very important to have a mobile version of your own blog. After writing the post on mobile marketing on my blog I realized that there are a lot of bloggers out there who don?t know to set up a mobile version of their blogs so I decided to write this post.

But before I jump into the step-by-step guide let me walk you through why it is important to have a mobile version of your blog.

You may already have seen that mega websites like Facebook, Google and other big blogs like Huffington Post, How-To-Geek, Famous Bloggers etc have mobile version of their website. Its because of the fact that more people hang around with their mobile and use it for browsing the Internet and finding stuff now a days like never before.

These big brands know the value of having mobile version of their website and so should you. Today with more people using mobile than internet (according to a study) you need to have a mobile version of your blog so that if the visitors somehow stumble on your website using their mobile phone, your blog looks clean and loads up fast.

There are a lot of disadvantages of a desktop based websites/blog when loaded using a mobile phone. Some of them are:

• Large Page Sizes ? As the desktop version of a website/blog contains a lot of stuff, the page size is very large especially when we talk about loading them up in a mobile browser.
• More Page Load Time ? Large sized WebPages need more time to load and as the speed of internet on mobile phones is limited, the load time can piss off your visitors.
• More content ? In the desktop version of your website you have all sorts of different components such as sidebar, footer, fancy css and java scripts etc. These cause distraction when browsing your blog using a mobile browser as the size of the screen is very small.

So it?s best to have a mobile version of your blog so that your visitors will feel more comfortable browsing through and read your content. After all helping visitors solve their problem is the only thing that is going to make them stick with you. Isn?t it?

So let me process to the step-by-step guide.

If you have finally made up your mind that you need a mobile version of your WordPress blog follow these instructions and by the end of this post you?d have made your own mobile version blog.

1. Go to Plugins > Add Plugins from your WordPress backend and search for WordPress Mobile Pack. This plugin automatically detects when a user is trying to access your blog using a mobile phone and redirects to the optimized mobile version of your blog.

2. From the list of results install WordPress Mobile Pack and click Activate button to install the plugin that comes on the next page.

3. After installing the plugin, go to Appearance. You?ll see three new tabs there Mobile Theme, Mobile Widget and Mobile Switcher. These are used to configure how your mobile website looks. First go to Mobile Themes. In this page you have all the necessary options to make changes to you mobile blog. Keep in mind to make the following changes to the setting for best results.

4. Now get your mobile phone and try to open your website from its browser. You?ll see the difference. All the fluff is gone and only pure content is left.

5. There are two more options that this plugin provides: Mobile Widget ? which is used for enable? widget and Mobile Swithcer ? which is used for selecting a theme. I don?t recommend enabling the sidebar widgets as it creates hindrance and does not look good.

6. The website looks raw when you first install it with just text in it. You can change the theme using the Mobile Switcher. There are four themes to choose from. Choose the one that suits your blog the most.

This way you can convert your desktop based blog in to a mobile version blog. If you are an advanced user and know about HTML and CSS then you can go to Themes > Editor and customize the theme as per your requirement. This gives you the power to add your blog?s logo, alter font sizes and color of the mobile version blog.

So after installing the plugin and tweaking up the source files a bit, here how my blog now looks like on a mobile browser:

Spain's Rajoy, ruling party deny secret payment scheme

MADRID (Reuters) - Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and Spain's ruling People's Party denied on Thursday that the party made unofficial payments from business donors to the premier and other party leaders after a newspaper published what it said were secret party accounts.

El Pais published images of excerpts of almost two decades of handwritten accounts that it said were maintained by People's Party treasurers. El Pais said the accounts showed 11 years of payments to Rajoy of 25,200 euros ($34,200) a year.

The accounts - which the newspaper said amounted to a parallel unofficial bookkeeping system - show donations from companies, mostly builders, and regular payments of thousands of euros to a number of party leaders.

"The People's Party has no knowledge of the handwritten notes that were published and of their content, and it cannot be recognized, in any case, as this political party's books," the PP said in a statement.

The statement said the party's payments to its leaders and staff were always legal and followed tax rules. The party also denied that there were systematic payments to people other than their official paychecks.

A spokeswoman from Rajoy's office told Reuters the prime minister stood by comments he has made recently that he has not engaged in improper conduct.

High Court Judge Pablo Ruz, who is investigating a four-year-old corruption case involving the PP, has asked prosecutors to look into the allegations of secret payments to party officials and could open a new line of investigation, court sources told Reuters.

The party has ordered an external audit of its accounts.

The widening corruption scandal over alleged secret cash payments to PP leaders has hit Rajoy's popularity as he struggles with a deep recession, a fiscal crisis that could push Spain into an international bailout, and the euro zone's highest unemployment rate.

"This does not help to calm down the difficult moments that we are going through, economically, politically and the climate on the street. This is a time for maximum transparency," Jose Antonio Monago, the president of the region of Extremadura, told reporters at a news conference regarding his region's accounts.

A recent poll by Metroscopia showed that 96 percent of Spaniards believe corruption is widespread in politics in Spain, after dozens of cases have emerged in recent years, most notably an ongoing judicial investigation into alleged embezzlement of public funds by King Juan Carlos' son-in-law.

The alleged payments may not necessarily be illegal if the party leaders declared the income in tax statements.

Until recently, Spanish political parties were allowed to receive anonymous donations. However, it would have been illegal not to book those donations in the book's official, regulated accounts, a People's Party source told Reuters.

BUILDING BOOM

A People's Party source, who asked not to be named, said the allegations raise serious ethical questions about party operations, especially because many of them occurred during Spain's building boom, in which politicians granted large numbers of development contracts.

"It looks like bribes, the nature of the document is very incriminating, if it's true," the source said.

Among the companies named in the El Pais story is builder and infrastructure and energy company FCC. FCC declined to comment. A source close to the company told Reuters that FCC would carry out an internal investigation regarding possible donations.

El Pais also said the president of another builder, OHL, Juan Miguel Villar Mir, was one of the donors. OHL declined to comment.

The accounts published in El Pais were allegedly from two former PP treasurers. One of them is Luis Barcenas, who stepped down as party treasurer in 2009 when judges began to investigate his possible involvement in alleged illegal payments and kickbacks to party officials from builders and other businesses that won government contracts.

The ongoing judicial investigation of Barcenas has revealed recently that he had a Swiss bank account which at one point held as much as 22 million euros. His lawyer has said previously that the money is from legitimate businesses and that Barcenas has now declared taxes on the income.

Press officials from Spain's High Court confirmed that Barcenas' lawyer has provided to the court a document showing that in 2012 his company applied for a tax amnesty on funds in the Swiss bank account.

Barcenas' lawyer was not immediately available for comment. ($1 = 0.7370 euros)

Goodell joked that his picture is in every restaurant, he has a float in the Mardi Gras parade and there's even a voodoo doll.

In a more serious vein, he said that while he gets comments from fans around town, everyone in New Orleans has been receptive and that the city is a great place to have a Super Bowl.

Study sees prostate cancer treatment side effects

A new study shows how important it is for men to carefully consider treatments for early-stage prostate cancer. Fifteen years after surgery or radiation treatment, nearly all of the older men in the study had some problems having sex.

About one-fifth had bladder or bowel trouble, researchers found.

The study doesn't compare these men - who were 70 to 89 at the end of the study - to others who did not treat their cancers or to older men without the disease. At least one study suggests that half that age group has sexual problems even when healthy.

The study isn't a rigorous test of surgery and radiation, but it is the longest follow-up of some men who chose those treatments.

Since early prostate cancers usually don't prove fatal but there are no good ways to tell which ones really need treatment, men must be realistic about side effects they might suffer, said one study leader, Dr. David Penson of Vanderbilt University.

"They need to look at these findings and say, 'Oh my gosh, no matter what I choose, I'm going to have some quality-of-life effect and it's probably greater than my doctor is telling me,'" he said.

The study appears in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men. In the United States alone, there were about 240,000 new cases and 28,000 deaths from the disease last year. Radiation or surgery to remove the prostate are common treatments when the disease is confined to the gland.

Men usually live a long time after treatment - 14 years on average - so it's important to see how they fare, said another study leader, Vanderbilt's Dr. Matthew Resnick.

The study involved 1,655 men diagnosed in 1994 or 1995, when they were ages 55 to 74. About two-thirds of them had surgery and the rest, radiation. They were surveyed two, five and 15 years later. By that time, 569 had died.

Men who had surgery had more problems in the first few years after their treatments than those given radiation, but by the end of the study, there was no big difference.

After 15 years, 18 percent of the surgery group and 9 percent of the radiation group reported urinary incontinence, and 5 percent of the surgery group and 16 percent of the radiation group said they were bothered by bowel problems. But the differences between the two groups could have occurred by chance alone once researchers took other factors such as age and the size of the men's tumors into account.

Impotence was "near universal" at 15 years, the authors write - 94 percent of the radiation group and 87 percent of the surgery group. But the difference between the groups also was considered possibly due to chance. Also, less than half of men said they were bothered by their sexual problems.

"These men do get some help from pills like Viagra, Cialis, Levitra," but it may not be as much as they would like and most men would rather not need those pills, Penson said.

The National Cancer Institute paid for the study. Two authors have consulted for several makers of prostate cancer treatment drugs.

No study is perfect and this one has many limitations, said Dr. Timothy Wilson, urology chief at City of Hope, a cancer center in Duarte, Calif. Men who are having problems are more likely to complete follow-up surveys because they're angry, so that could skew results, he noted.

Still, "it's a high percentage" with side effects, said Wilson, who has been a paid speaker for two makers of surgery equipment.

"There's no question we overtreat" many cases of early prostate cancer, yet the disease is still the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in men. "We need to better sort out who really needs treatment," he said.
